CALGARY (CP) — A
report prepared by the
personnel department says
the stereotype of women
working in clerical-sec-
retarial positions is “firmly
entrenched'’ among the
city’s 6,-200 permanent
employees.

The study says:

—Women occupy
traditional clerical and
secretarial positions, with
very few women occupying
what we often refer to as.
male-oriented jobs.”

—"The 69 women within
the management-exempt
(non-union) group were
represented again in lower
salary ranges. These
positions were mostly senior
clerical and secretarial

Clive Chalkley, personnel
director, said: "The report
reflects largely, attitudinal
problems—among males
and females, and
management staff.

“You have to work on
people's attitudes and
awareness, and make sure
women do get assistance so
they’re more promotable,’'
STICK TO TRADITION

An attitude revealed by the
study was that 55 per cent of
men and 26 per cent of
women think traditionally
female jobs’ are most ap-
propriate for women.

“All respondents indicated
strongly that men do not
prefer to work for a woman
and that men are given
priority for managerial
positions,” said the report.

Males and managers
believe women have a higher
turnover rate, are more
often absent from their jobs
and should be - primarily
responsible for sick off-
spring.

When it comes to con-
sideration for advancement
“only males and managers
believe that opportunities
are equai.”’ :
