Origami lets the mind soar By JENNIFER LANG YOU CAN build some- thing beautiful out of an ordinary piece of paper ~ even a newspaper flyer. Just ask Noriko Shiga, wha, along with Karen Ting, coordinates the Ori- gami Club, Every second and fourth Friday evening of the menth, the two women pass on the fine art of fold- ing paper to anyone who wants to learn. Most people associate the craft with shapes made out of cheer- tise, so they figured, why not teach others how? It’s very popular in Asian countries, says Ting, who is originally from Hong Kong. “Most Asian children have origami skills,” Ting says. It’s fun, and it’s benefi- cial, particularly for grow- ing minds. She says origami helps children understand spatial telationships. It also deve- laps logic and three-di- mensional math skills. Part of the craft is learning the steps to create something beautiful — and complex. But there’s room for creativity, too, says her club colleague Ting. Little boys are especi- ally fond of inventing their own origami designs - from airplanes to rackets. - The two women formed the Origami Club back in 1998. Fine motor skills are necessary, too, “To some people it comes natural- ly,” Ting says. “It’s really fun and at the same time, - educational.” The Origami Club meets every second Friday evening at the Terrace Li- brary at 7 p.m. Anyone can drop by.
