BRINGING THE WAR HOME, This week the budget for 1918 was hrought down in the house at Ottawa, and was marked by “the numerous addilional revenue- raising taxes contained therein. The fact that we shall have to pay extra for our tea and coffee, moving pictures, tobaccos, and many other items that constitute apart of what we consider the necessities of life should impress upon us the part we must hear in the great human sactifice that is being made in the world today. Additional taxes form the only solution to the ever-growing problem of financing our share in the war. We ought to be thank- fuland proud that we are not paying ‘tribute to a conquering tyrant, and consider ourselyes lueky that we are only called on | to pay in the preportion to the so-called ‘‘|juxuries’’ we consume. Surely tea is a luxury and should be taxed, and the sanie applies to coffee and other beverages. Tobacco can be dispensed with at home, if necessary, A man who can afford to buy a $5000 auto-| 1; mobile ean afford to pay $500) ' war tax on it, crease in ihe income tax can only |’ be regarded in the light of buy- ing so many.shelis for the boys at the frout. Let us ther: fore take these ad- ditional taxes cheerfully. . They are inevitable, No. amount of money we tan give can equal the sacrifices that the boys in the trenches are making, and it would seem an insult to them: to make protest against the taxes, which -ave just and right and equitable, affecting the individual only ac- cording to the wealth with which he is blessed.
