PAGE 82, THE HERALD, Wednesday, July 28, 1976 | Binkly and Doinkel have The Department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs has undertaken a major information program since the introduction of the Hazardous Products Act in June 1969, to tell consumers about product safety and to ensure that products designed for consumer use meet safely standards. A very important audience for such a program is young children. Over the years thousands of children have suffered Needless, injury, and even death, through the misuse of “certain potentially hazar- dous but common household products. - A special puppet program, aimed at children, was first staged in the summer of 1973, The Binkly and Doinkel presentation is organized by the Depart- ment of Consumer and Corporate Affairs and funded under the Depart- ment of Consumer and Corporate Affairs and funded under the Depart- ment of Manpower and Immigration’s Student Summer Employment and Activities Program. The script has been developed and reviewed with educational con- sultants, child psychologists and nutritionists and it is designed to transmit a dual message about safety in the home and about good eating habits. The use of the medium of puppets to give information to children has been proven to be a most effective and entertaining com- municalions tool. For this reason, a fourth summer's program started the first week in July. The 1974 program in- valyes about 20 student puppeteers from across Canada, who have dramatic arls or teaching experience. These students undergo extensive training in Ottawa and in Vancouver and then take the 20-minute puppet show lo parks and playgrounds throughout the country. Since 1973, the live per- farmances have been supplemented by the distribution of a 20-minute coloured film, the Binkly and Doinkel Safety Show, circulated to ministries of education and through the National Film Board. In addition, a series of four 60- second public service television clips were sent to all television stations in Canada, These clips used the puppet characters, Binkly and Doinkel, to tell children about the dangers of household chemical products as illustrated by the four symbols on their labels (poison, corrosive, flammable, explosive). The 1976 summer show, entilled Binkly and Doainkel Road Show, features Binkly and Doinkel, the puppet twins from outer space; Sniffer (the dog), who befriends them during their visit, Pockets (the clown), R. Pugsley de Pugh (the villain), The show was written by Noreen Young, creator of many children’s shows, including Hi Diddle Day and the new ‘Pencil Box" show and by Bruce Kingsley.. It tells the story of Binkly and Doinkel who, on special assignment, have to inform children about hazardous preducts symbols. On earth, they encounter R. Pugsley de Pugh, who wants to hypnotize the world, so he can get rid of good eating and fitness. The touring program runs a total length of ten weeks. LAMB — I am 55 years old and enjoy your column very much. [ would like to know your thinking on protein. At times you indicate you favor a high protein diet and other times that excess protein goes into fat. You say that health can be injured if one doesn't have enough pro- tein. What do you consider a minimum standard for an ac- live male of ‘160 pounds? My diet consists of juices, fruits, saups, vegetables, salad and a small amount of meat. No fried foods, no fats, no excess salt. I wauld like to teen my weight at the present v lavel. DEAR READER -- There is aright and wrong amount of almost all good things in life, _ and protein is no exception. You will be getting enough protein if your diet includes 60 grams of good protein a day. Naw, nat all pratein is good protein, meaning that it con- tains adequate amounts of all the essential amino acids that the body cannot manufacture from other protein. The other proviso is that your diel must contain enough calories to meet your energy heeds, particularly if youhave already eliminated all the ex- cess body fat so many people carry around. If you are on a starvation diel your body will use your body protein for calories to provide essential energy. About the only people who need more protein than this are those actually building muscle mass (not muscle fat) and that could increase the requirement up to about 1# grams a day. When you take more protein in than your body needs to build or replace lost bedy pro- tein, the excess is broken down to calories for im- mediale energy or to form fat. A lot of people do not un- derstand that proteins are NEW IN TOWN? LET US PUT GUT THE MAT “a he Maal Dames sort tM eg : ‘Right’ and ‘wrong’ of protein made up of a varlety of amino acids that are the building blocks for body protein. For a more complete understanding of proteins in your diet and your body needs, you can send in 50 cents each for lwo issues © of The Health Letter, number 3-6 and 3-7, Proteins. Part | and Proteins, Part IL. These issues will tell you how much protein you need at different . ages and what foods provide good protein. They also ex- plain how your body uses pro- lein to build vital structures and for energy. Just send your request to me in care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 1551, Radio City Station, New York, NY 10019. Send a long, stamped, self-addressed envelope for mailing. The figures I have given you for protein are based on the Recommended Daily Allowances established in 1974 - by the National Academy af Sciences. This amount is more than the minimal daily allowance and includes enough to provide an excess for many healthy people. In the past many of the protein © requirements have been over- ly generous. These amounts are fine for most healthy peo- ple. In case of illness or un- usual situations, the amount might be different. You can figure that a pound . of raw, separable, lean meat, fish or poultry will contain / about 100 grams of protein. . That is the weight after all skin, bone and inedible parts have been removed. ; Milk and milk products are an excellent source of good protein. You can‘use the non- — fat products to avold fat and still get protein. The problem with many so-called high pro- tein diets is that they contain Jats of fat, too. That is not necessary if one uses low fat dairy products and lean meats, fish and poultry and the proper food preparation. The formula establishes a set rate of 62.5 cents per participant-hour and represents a substantial increase to nearly all centres. The few centres which had been operating above the new rate will continue on the schedule until their capacity brings them in line with the new formula. In addition to the rate changes, the Minister an- nounced that the three basic categories of handicapped facilities will be brought under one umbreila and be called Achievement Cen- tres. Included in the designation will be han- dicapped drop-in centres, activity centres and workshops. “These changes are only the first in a series of steps that we will be undertaking in the next few months to improve workshop facilities for handicapped -persons,” said Vander Zalm. “As outlined in the Guaranteed Available In- come for Need (GAIN) Act, we are planning to establish an association which will coordinate the activilies of these workshops in an effort to prevent duplication of production, and assist with enhancing marketability of workshop goods. production and assist with enhancing marketability af workshop goods. “Some of the centres are roducing outstanding items and nearly all of the others could be similarly improved if we could establish guidelines for quality control] or arrange for transportation and marketing,’’ said the Minister, Mr, Vander Zalm aiso noted that Human Resources Department staff, in conjunction with Provincial Secretary Grace McCarthy, are arranging _a booth at this year’s P.N.E., lo display the variety of goods produced at the workshops. In addition the Minister explained that through the association the Department is hoping to arrange for display. and sale of han- dicapped persons’ products in such government-run operations as ferries and provincial parks. “We would like to make these products more ac- cessible to the general public and to show people how creative and adept the handicapped can be,” said Vander Zalm. “Itisa mystery tome why we should be importing these goods when we have an inexhaustible reservoir of talent right here in British Columbia.” Vander Zalm noted that changes will not involve expanding the number of centres in British Columbia at this time, but rather improving those now in operation. . The new achievement centre rate structure is effective as of July 1, 1976 and will involve the work performed by some 3,500 ndicapped persons. The complex previous formula involved =a graduated payment plan in which the centres were paid a decreasing participant- hour rate as the total number of hours for each centre increased. For example, the first 600 hours earned $720 or about $1.20 per hour, while 5,400 hours earned the centre only $2,160 or 40 cents per hour. “In essence, we are penalizing centres for im- proving and expanding their operalions,"’ explained ander Zalm, Realty World Member Brokers bring you their best Dupiex Investment.
