B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 27, 2002 From Bi Postcard from Brazil put it on your plate. 1 did not know this and was sa full from the meatless side dishes that [ could not cat the Brasillian Barbecue, I learned Brazil is speiled Brasil. My host family and I just clicked, like we had known each other forever. My first day of school in August had no weird- ness. It just clicked as well, In Canada, the new guy is often sort of alienated, but here I couldn't keep the people away if | tried. They are great to me. Before I came to Brasil, I did not know any of the language, | just knew how to say ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you’. My host brother spoke pretty good English, and my older host sister spoke satisfactory English. So, 1 could understand almost all of what she said, and when they speak my language it is easier to learn Portuguese. It took me about two months to fully understand what my host family was talking about. But still | can not understand some of the things they say, when they talk very far- mally, or when they speak in business terms, as my host father usually does. In August, my host fa- ther took us to see the manufacturing plant where they make Audi and Volkswagen Passats. So all the Passats in North and South America are made right here in Curiti- ba. It is really something to see. There is not really a lot of day life. Many of the small businesses open up around 6 p.m. and the mar- ket is filled with people. There is no bartering in this place as ] was told, but it doesn’t matter be- cause everything is so low priced. The oranges are not like’ oranges we see in Canada, They look funny and are wrinkled. Brasil is great ~ in Au- gust I went te my first fi- tebol game (soccer). People here are about as intense with futebol as Ca- nadians are with hackey. By September [ was craving Canadian foods. My hest family tried to ROBERT KOEPKE has months on a Rotary exchange trip to Brazil. spent the last several make me feel at home by buying me some cheddar cheese. But it was that processed Velveeta stuff. | tried hard to cheke it down without gagging and of course they were right there to watch me enjoy it. So far mom's peanut butter plan has not worked, I cannot convince them that people actually eat it. I am the only one in the house thal eats it and to tell you the truth, I never really cared for the stuff, Now I am sick of it. In October, I was sick with appendicitis. My host family’s relative was a doctor, so I was able to get care right away. Something I have been able to experience in Bra- sil is the carnaval. [ went to the world famous Copa- cobanna beach, An experience that | really enjoyed was when | went to the North East Coast of Brasil for a month with 115 other Rotary ex- change students. We went to the most historic and beautiful ci- ‘ties in''thé ‘Northéast and?” Central Interior of: Brasil ° “In this month, 'T"got’to ex- ° perience the different foods of the ever changing regions, people of ever so- cial and: economic back- ground and even learned how to barter when I wan- ted to buy something. I learned a lot not only about Brasil, but of the other countries of the other “petson:! 2 TQ EEN wt T-am looking forward to ‘coming baék to Canada; | exchange students. | spoke more German on the trip than I did Portuguese. In Brasil when the daughter of a family turns 15, she transforms from a girl into a woman. To celebrate this, the family spends a lot of money for a huge ball. Everyone who goes. (all the family and all the friends) are dressed very, very formally, as is the daughter, who is usually in a highly decorated gown. There is a large feast, followed by a large cake, that resembles a wedding cake (without the bride and groom). There is a large photo session afterwards. to close ‘the ball, all of the guests form a large circle around the daughter. Ballroom music starts to play, and the daughter goes to all holding a candle, starting with her father and they dance. Iam so glad 1] have had ’ this opporutity lo go to an- other country. 1 would re- commend it to any young wn SA pees Ps) gar but will miss Brasil! and the people I have come to think of as family. When I get home I want real butter, triple fruit jam, homogenized milk and mom’s homemade bread.
