(Editor’s note: Clarence Michiel Grade 5 teacher Tina Radelet sent us a letter last week saying she and her students were shocked and very disappointed after reading that firewood and firepits would no longer be supplied at some of their favourite cainping spots. The students wrote their own letters to Skeena NDP MLA Helmut Giesbrecht, asking him to bring back the firewood. They arrived here after the province Dear Helmut Giesbrecht backed down from its decision, While there are too many to print, we thought it appropriate to skow you a drawing that student Emily Bolin included with her letter. We've heen assured that Emily and her classmates, which include Gurbaldsh Aujla, Aisiyn Wall, Amy Mattern, Caitlin McCooey and Mark Hepburn, will be getting individual responses from Mr. Giesbrecht.) The north needs equality Dear Sir: _ Controversy and ill fecling has been gen- erated because of the doctors in Vander- hoof, Burns Lake and other locations in the . North feel they should get paid for being on call. I agree they should be paid for being on call. Health minister Penny Priddy and MSA have becn taking, advantage of the doctors and it should be corrected. It ‘has been discovered that Surrey Memorial Hospital has been paying doc- “tors $300 (plus fees) for ovemight coverage for the last three years. The amount was raised to $59) just last month and the health minister had to know about this as- suming she is competent in her job. Surrey is her riding. Penny Priddy has kept on negotiating and delaying a decision with the doctors in the north because she says it is going to cost the province money. Yet she pays doctors in Surrey $590 per shift plus fees for being on call overnight. The health minister has an obligation to treat the whole province equally. She has not done so with the doc- tors and health boards in tne north and in other locations. Odd Eidsvik, Prince Rupert, B.C. INDEPENDENTLY OWNED meant better personal service, Dear Sir: L enjoyed your special issue on 10 years of Terrace and The Terrace Standard, The letters to the editor are my favourite feature. The let- ters can cause nods of agreement or raise the blood pres- sure to the boiling point. Claudette Sandecki’s column has the same effect on readers. Sometimes the columns are funny (as when she fought technology and kept her old manual typewriter) and sometimes very serious when she comments on problems facing Canadians throughout the country or beloved in- stitutions like the CBC. I like Char Toews’ columns, too. Her story aboul eti- quette in the playground at Lower Little Park reminded me of the life I once lived in the slow lane. Or was that the Mommy track? (For Char’s information, the first rule at ‘Agar Park is ‘‘Don’t throw sand”’.) Sheelagh Meiklam’s column alerts us to good books st the library which we might have otherwise missed. Whether she’s writing about books which will inform us or entertain us, her work is very welcome. Strangely enough, I also read Rob Brown’s the Skeena Angler, ] know nothing about fish or angling policy or dis- agreements between fishing organizations. I prefer the Angler’s other stories about Fin and Webb and the beastly dog and his former students in Hazelton and what his daughter said when they drave dawn the road to that great fishing spot. Those stories are of interest to almost every- one. The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 29, 1998 - A7 Loves letters and columns CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag For Christmas 1997, a friend gave me one of the Skeena Angler’s books aud I like it for the history of Terrace people which crept in amongst the famous fishing spats of the north, Yvonne Moen, too, recounts stories of some of Terrace’s long time residents, A good local newspaper causes readers to consider dif- ferent viewpoints. Although I am a lifelong pacifist, 1 found myself in agreement with local auxiliary RCMP of- ficer Debbie Scarborough on the need of auxiliary officers to carry guns. I understand that the officers have extensive training and face the same dangers as the RCMP officers they. assist. Who knows better than the officers, them- selves, if they need to carry guns? I also found myself in agreement with Councillor David Hull (a rare circumstance) as he was quoted in your pages on the challenges to our children in the public schools and how parents and teachers should assist students, Congratulations om the past years and many more to come. Marguerite Clarkson, Terrace, B.C. (received via e-mail) Hepatitis victim wants justice Dear Sir: My name is Christine Julie Campbell. I am 42 years old and a mother of a 10-year-old daughter. | have been tested positive for Hepatitis C. I received a letter a few months ago advising me to have my blood tested as I am on file for having a blood transfusion for a gallbladder operation that T received at Delta Hospital on March 4, 1985, For the past 13 years I have suffered in many ways, un- known to me why. Things like extreme fatigue, bowel probiems, nervous conditions and a lot of burn-out from working at various jobs. J don’! have the energy to cope with life on life’s terms. I was on employment insurance until April 18 when J found myself going to Human Resources for financial as- sistance. I will be on assistance in May but will also be ex- pected to look for work after a period of time. 1 will find that difficult to do because of the symptoms I have, and the older 1] get the more ] feel that I am deteriorating from this disease, Nevertheless, [ have no choice, Under the rules and laws of both governments I am forced to find emplay- ment while I still feel that I am physically burned out. I do not function physically or emotionally like a normal person who has enough energy (to get them through a full day of work, and also come home from work and cook dinner and so on. It is an efforl to keep up my own home. I must say thatI feel very hurt and unjustified because of the years of torment of being on one antidepressant medication after another in my belief of being depressed when I was really suffering from the symptoms of Hepatitis C. I sit in my living room with my daughter. It is April 4, 1998. It’s a beautiful sunny day outside, She says to me, “Mom, let’s wash the car.”’ ’m thinking before I answer her, ‘‘How can I say no to her-again — that Mom’s too tired today to wash the car with her.” She says, ‘‘Mom, you’re always tired and we don’t have as much fun anymore.’’ She says this with sadness, She does not know that her mom has this disease. [ feel that she worries enough wilhout having to know her mom is sick with Hepatitis C. T know before long that Codie will have to be told be- cause [ ain running out of excuses, and yet, 1 don’t want her tc know and worry her more. We agreed to clean out the car together. When we were done, I was exhausted. I needed to rest again. 1 am grateful that Codie is of school age for it is when she is in schoo) that ] de a lot of resting and I find myself needing naps as well. It hurts me deeply when I have to tell my child, ‘‘No, I can’t fake you swimming tonight because I’m too tired, maybe tomorrow,’’ Now she doesn’t ask anymore because she knows whai the answer will be. I am not asking for a handout, I am asking for justice. I “I! pray to God that | can continue to cope with this illness,” want you to be aware of what I have and am facing daily Since contracting Hepatitis C. I pray to God that I can con- tinue to cope with this illness so that I will experience the dream of all parents — to see my daughter grow into adulthood, marry and have grandchildren for me to love and enjoy. But, I live in fear of deteriorating even more and fading out of life’s picture before this dream has an opportunity to come true. I ask you to please understand how I feel about being given this disease and suffering for something that is not my fault. [ am a good person, I did not ask for this but Iam paying for it and, therefore, I feel that I am being treated unfairly by ail systems of governments in being excluded from any anticipated compensation for Hepatitis C victims, Christine Campbell, Terrace B.C. 90 DAYS 0.A.C.
