The Terrace Beautification Society is looking for all types of plants for its 3rd annual plant sale, on May 9. “Unless we get some moncy we can’t do our projects,’” explains organizer Alison Johansen. Recent projects have in- chided fixing up the Keith Ave. side of the overpass, and planting shrubs at the top of Lanfear hill. The society has some am- bitious plans for the future. It wants to create a linear park along Hwy. 16 west to Kalum Lake Rd. The plant sale will be the socicly’s biggest money raiser this year. Alma Krumm, 76, died of what investi- gators suspect was heart failure during the March 26 drug bust at McNeil St. ’ A man who also lived in the house was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. Kitimat coroner Paul Monaghan says the law requires a full coroner’s inquest when a person dies in police custody. And that in- ‘cludes situations in which police officers have control of'a scene. Condoms debated ‘“‘But if you save one kid from AIDS, no matter what you spend, its worth the money,” added Stewart. In Smithers, board chair Bob Haslett said there's been no negative feedback from the community, after the initial furor died down. Condom machines are at Houston Secondary, but the ones in Smithers Secondary were vandalized, so now baskets of condoms are available in counselling of fices. ‘A lot of people had serious concerns the board would be promoting teen sexuality,”’ said Haslett. But he said the district had aid continues to have a strong pro-abstinence pro- gram. ‘Not only was the deci- sion a good one but the meetings were al] open to the public,” he pointed out. Haslett isn’t sure how many condoms are used by students. He said counsel- lors make a point of not keeping track, so students don't feel self-conscious. In Terrace, the school board has received about ten leticrs against condoms and a petition from the Sacred Heart Parish with 265 signa- tures of people opposed to installing condom machines in school. In a letter to the board Paul Evans wrote, ‘‘Installa- tion of these machines at once sends a clear message of encouragement and at the same time, insults the indi- vidual teens self control.’”’ Linda and Lioyd «= Wittkowski wrote, ‘‘Why not got one step further and put cocaine and alcohol ma- chines instead of pop and chip machines.” ‘dé the board, which represents the wishes and values of the parents and public, installs these ma- chincs they are in effect more than merely recogniz- ing that some youth are promiscuous, they are con- doning that promiscuity and even expanding its influence to other young people,” wrote Rev. About 75 pages worth of letters, petitions and docu- ments supporiing condoms will be presented by de Leeuw at the upcoming edu- cation mecting on April 15, Pe Ga oS ae Fa Eze. The RCMP are also conducting an inves- tigation into Krumm’s death. An officer from another detachment will hold a review of the case to make sure police handled the situalion appropriately.
