1 tein aalate siti cane ——— 20 Terrace Review — Wednesday, March 2, 1988 Principal pI Family Life TERRACE — After reaching the halfway point in the Family Life Education Program, Cale- donia Senior Secondary prin- cipal Bill Sturn says he’s pleased with the program. In what he called a “‘unique” presentation of the units, Sturn said that every teacher in the school is in- volved in the program in a very specialized way. Each school has developed its own method of implementing the Family Life Program. Sturn said‘Caledonia formed a steering committee to determine how to get the greatest value from the program, and the end result has been teachers volunteering to specialize in two of ten lessons during the first block of each day. In this way, he said, very little instructional time is lost from an individual course. He said teachers believe that by specializing in two topics they are able to offer students a more comfortable and polished pre- sentation. By volunteering, tea- -chers have shown unified sup- port for the program. ‘‘I felt it reflected the professionalism of the staff at Caledonia,’’ said Sturn. The Caledonia approach is different from. most other schools in the province. Sturn said most schools chose to take 10 hours out of one academic course and select one teacher to present all 10 lessons. But this program resulted in dissatisfied students who were missing a significant part of their course time, .and teachers who were unable to give a “‘polished’’ presentation be- cause each lesson was a new ex- © perience. Caledonia counsellor Mags Gingles said that to this point the program has been going ex- tremely well and teacher-student dialogue is encouraging. Gingles explained that there had been concern on the part of the tea- chers before the program began that there would be problems in initiating classroom discussion. She said that, because of that concern, she arranged for easy access for both teachers and students with several specialized social agencies and the R.C.M.P., and posted a list in each classroom. Caledonia teacher Al Camer- on said that he was one of those originally apprehensive about teaching the Family Life Educa- tion Program material, but now that the program has begun he is feeling good about it. “T felt as though I was start- ing teaching again,’’ he said, ‘‘but student reaction has been just excellent. I had a class yesterday of 30 students and they gave me 100 percent of their support and attention.’’ And, according to Cameron, ‘“‘They’re taking it very serious- ly.”” Terrace Interiors Ltd.
