srelerel Letter ae PAGE Aé, THE HERALD, Wednesday, April 13. 1977 from Mas Queen Charlottes This weekend I must have the column for the Q.C.I. Observer written one day earlier but when I put paper into the typewriter ast night I started out with the heading that I use for the Herald. It could be there was a reason for this having happened so this edition wil be started first. It has been such a bus time this past while that a cooorrespteence has suf- fered as has the proper hours for sleep. On March 18 the Bryants _finall managed ta have the staff party that had been scheduled once before for the end of February. The second date coincided with basketball finals but those going to attend these games were just told to come af- terwards. Those who were taking part would no doubt have a good appelite and the menu included lots of food. Apparently this party turned out to be a very successiul one, according to comments made later. When I have suggested a second one in June, those who were unable to come have said they will not miss the next one. The evening consisted of much variety — entertainment featured piano, organ and guitar music; two tables of bridge carried on in the “red room’ and scrabble was played in the dining area. All told there were no dull moments since my sister had brought up her late husband's polaroid camera and quite a few pictures were taken as well. Presumably food and the punch bowl contributed to the evening's finale of barbershop harmony. Suddenly somebody happened to look at the time and it turned out to be after 4 a.m. so the last of our visitors departed. For some reason it was closer to 5:30 a.m. by the time I got to bed, with the result that getting up te play badminton at 8:30 left me somewhat short of sleep. I hadn't planned to enter this competition, but the partner that 1 had won the mixed doubles with the winter before last, had phoned asking me to play. As it turned out he has been refereeing for basketball games and had been at the Haida Village party until 4:30 a.m. Despite all this we did manage to have to play three games before we were eliminated from the com- petition. (Had there been a B group we probably would have been playing for most of the weekend as the finals ‘or singles and doubles were played off Sunday mor- ning.) Between the regular bingo games and cards, this past week has raced by. Gordon Scott was invited to come up several times and so he Folio 06080.000, the Municipal Hall. 7:15 p.m. accordingly. Buchanan Clerk-Administrator PISTRICT OF TERRACE arrived on Wednesday to Spend several days. Back in ictoria I gather he is often in bed around 9 p.m., but this ia not the pattern for Masset. It could be he will have to catch up on some sleep once he returns to the big city. We have had a complete variety of weather — at the moment the sun is shinin and all looks very beautiful, yet earlier there were snowflakes falling. One morning during the week we woke up to find a light cover of snow on road and ground, but this did not last. According to a recent visitor to Vancouver the flowers here are ahead of those in gardens there. To my knowledge, this is the first time Masset flowers have been ahead of those in the lower part of the ‘mainland. At this time we have even brought several of the hyacinths indoors to enjoy and we also have a bouquet of mixed daffodils’ and narcissi added to the lovely flowers sent over by Ole Gilbertson. Gordon packed up a giant leg os fresh Slat Spring {sland lamb and a large bundle of fresh asparagus, so we have been dining royally, It has also been quite nice for me to come home from school and not to have to prepare any meals. Most of the time I have not even had anything to do either, with the dishes. It was Wednesday evening, when I was on the bike exercising, that Gordon brought in a clipping for me that his sister Marie had clipped out of a Victoria paper. She thought 1 might ppen to know the person from Terrace who had died. When I saw the name of Ellen Bastin I was both shocked and deeply grieved. There was even some remorse, since this out- spoken Leo had written something in a Christmas communication about Ellen having ering ;.about’ her being away that long from her family. I had also not answered her reply to me, in which she told me that she wantedtolearrralf she could about the problems of reading s0 that she could help those children unable to read. According to my own reading, no studies are ever lost, so 1 am quite sure Ellen will be busy on another plane, or in another frame of existence, carrying on with her teaching. (The con- tinuous process of learning is evident in the birth of prodigies.) Just recently a New Year’s stencilled letter arrived from Joan Heiberg, Black Creek, B.C. Joan was teaching at Campbell River Junior Secondary School when it was - totally destroyed by fire last year, save for the library and one shop. Everything not bolted to the walls was saved from the library by a human By Elvira Bryant chain of children and other good citizens. As a result of the fire, all teachers were given different courses to teach, but Joan was put in charge of the junior library. A shift arrangement will be in operation for three more years. The extra portion of the letter is about one of our well-known authors, Roderick Haig-Brown, and for this reason, I will quote from the letter: “This fall Campbell River and the rest of the world lost a very wonderful person — Rod Haig-Brown died on October 9. It was totall unexpected — he was well and active up to almost the moment of his death. I went to the funeral in the little church only a hundred yards or so from their home. I haven’t been to a funeral for . many years but I’ve never been to one or known of one that was so humane and answered so well the needs of the moment. His daughter, Valerie, read a passage from his writin and after the service we athered at Haig-Browns ‘or tea and refreshments. The loss of such a loved and esteemed person calls for a time to be set aside to talk with the family and reminisce on the events of his life. He had just com- pleted a book whieh Ann, his wife, said was in the publisher's hands. It was well-timed, she said, and she was also thankful that his death was so clean. 1 don’t expect I'll be privileged to see such faith eieceaetatatatatst Hie TaceTeceeSebeSaayseataeneat re adataeannestpemtaetestoneditoy: Rare nletetteatel Fe Catefetesete = et oy 3 ¢ as hers very often in my lifetime.” Before concluding, I should mention one other book that I read earlier this month. It was “Beyond Medicine” by Hans Holtzer. In it the author discussed the “physiological and ychie theory responsible ‘or unorthodox healing.” According to Mr. Holtzer, false thinking and frustration are two causes of disease. One can send positive thoughts’ which enable a person to get well. Positively programmed electrical particles will set the hody’s defense mechanism into action. There are many in- teresting chapters in this book, which is fairly ‘light reading.” The last chapter seqannarcacaccacacitiieltet tasbstelel caso e nate includes warnings. against “fakers and quacks”, It seems true though that one would remain much healthier through positive thinking.
