Radio-Canada broadcasts lies about collaborator In a press release Feb. 14, . ,Canadian author Sydney Gordon, now living in Berlin, GDR, tells of an incident of false propaganda occurring over Radio Canada’s Ukrainian language broadcast to the Soviet Ukraine on Aug. 27, 1977. In that broadcast, says Gordon, “The false information concern- ed an inmate of a Soviet prison, Svyatoslav Karavansky - (who Was) praised as a ‘dissident’, and’ democrat and a fighter for Ukrai- nian culture’. Gordon wrote the CBC in November, 1977 and provided the Corporation with a lengthy out- line of Karavansky’s crimes, showing him not as a ‘“dissident’’, but a traitor and collaborator with’ the nazis in World War Two. He asked that the real story of Karavansky be aired in future - broadcasts to the USSR by Radio Canada. The press release Christians in GDR work for world peace By FILS DELISLE Tribune Berlin Correspondent BERLIN — The leaders of the Evangelical Church in the GDR, Tepresenting the country’s main hristian body, have reaffirmed their cordial relations with the Tman socialist state and the Need for both Christians and the Socialist state to continue their Collaboration in the interests of € people and a world at peace. The restatement of the position _ ‘of Christians in the GDR, and Support for that position by the. Communist leadership of the Country, came at a meeting bet- Ween church leaders and Erich Onecker, general secretary of the Socialist Unity Party and hairman of the Council of State. Considerable importance was attached to. the Christian- Ommunist exchange of views. It Was pointed out that statements by both sides indicated a stable iC Onship between Christians Te and the socialist state. They also Provided an authoritative re- futation of the ever-recurring Propaganda in the West that seeks fo distort and defame both Chris- S$ and the socialist state. Representing the Christians at the meeting were Bishop Al- brecht Schoenherr, Bishop Werner Krusche, Kurt Domisch, president of the Evangelical Church leadership in the GDR, . and others. Honecker praised the church’s contribution to the work for world peace, to the improvement of so- cial services in the GDR, and to its efforts to help ‘‘ban racism and neo-colonialism from the life of mankind’’. “ Bishop Schoenherr said ‘‘both sides are concerned, on the basis of their own principles, with the responsibility for the same world and for the same people. I must emphasize that the Christian (in the GDR) understands his exis- tence as a citizen of the state not only in the fact that he formally respects the laws, but also, on the basis of his faith, feels a sense of co-responsibility both for the whole structure as well as for the individual and for the individual’s relationship to that structure.” He declared that the church in the GDR had from the beginning supported the goals of Helsinki and expressed the hope that these goals would be more and more implemented after the Belgrade Conference. charges the CBC with ignoring the facts presented to them by Gordon and his request for a cor- rection. He is now making the facts pub- lic, says Gordon in his press statement, because “‘it is obvi- ously not the function of Radio Canada to foment discord be- tween Canada and the USSR but to promote understanding be- tween our two peoples ...”” The key facts provided to the CBC by Gordon about Karavansky are: — In 1941 he deserted from the Soviet army in the midst of battle and crossed over to the enemy, . — After the nazi occupation of Odessa, he worked with Ukrai- nian fascists there and with nazi forces, . —He fled with Romanian troops in 1944 and received spy training. Parachuted into the Uk- raine, he was captured by Soviet intelligence, tried, and sentenced to 25 years in jail, — He was released in 1960 on parole, given every opportunity to rehabilitate himself. He pub- lished and translated extensively, — But when he resumed his contacts with foreign sources and underground anti-Soviet agents, he was sent back to. prison to serve out his sentence. ‘During my researches in Kiev and other parts of the Uk- raine,’’ Gordon wrote in his letter to the CBC, “‘ for a forthcoming book on détente, dissidents, Uk- rainian underground and emigre organizations, I found that com- mentaries like the one in your Au- gust program create anger and in- dignation among Ukrainian citi- zens ... just about every family has agonizing memories of mur- ders committed during the war by the fascist powers and their local agents like Karavansky.”’ Gordon offered the CBC documentary proof ‘‘and other evidence to establish what Soviet courts - have proven and Karavansky himself has ad- mitted.”’ ITT EXECUTIVES CAUGHT LYING ABOUT CHILE ROLE WASHINGTON — Two officials of the International Telephone and Telegraph (ITT) have been charged by the U.S. Justice Depart- ment with lying about the corporation’s role during the 1970 election of Salvador Allende as Chile’s president. The two had testified in 1973 that ITT had not acted in any way to prevent the election of Allende when, in fact, it was disclosed in 1975 that both the CIA and ITT had funded Allende’s opponents. The two executives charged with perjury and obstruction of justice are Edward Gerrity, a senior vice-president of ITT and Robert Berrel- lez, a former ITT Latin American official. PANAMA-U.S. TREATY PASSED BY U.S. SENATE WASHINGTON — The first of two treaties with Panama was passed by the Senate March 16 by a 68-32 vote, two more’than the two-thirds vote required. How much it cost the Carter Administration in favors and other forms of aid is not known, but it is believed the cost was high. Sixteen Republicans voted with 52 Democrats on what was elevated into a major issue by the ultra-right. Panamanian President Gen. Omar Torrijos warned that Panama would accept no changes in the treaties which would mean “‘occupa- tion in.perpetuity disguised as morality.’’ However, the final treaty with terms of ratification, a device used to soften the impact, contains provisions strengthening U.S. “‘rights’’ in the Panama Canal, including first passage, use of military force if the Canal should be closed for whatever reason, etc.: CAMBODIA CONTINUES ATTACK ON VIETNAM HANOI — Over 1,000 Cambodian Army troops continued their assault March 17 on the Vietnamese port city of Ha Tien on the Gulf of Thailand near the Cambodia-Vietnam border. The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) called the attack ‘‘a serious escalation’ and warned “‘if the Cambodian authorities continue this criminal military adventure ... they will bear the entire responsibility for the consequences of their actions.” Earlier news reports stated that Chinese ships were bringing in weapons to supply the four Cambodian Army divisions operating in the southern border region. U.S. SUPPLIER OF ARMS TO SMITH REGIME LUSAKA — The Zambian Daily Mail has blasted the U.S. and NATO for their military aid to the Smith regime. The paper says the U.S. and Britain give Smith 67% of his arms.
