CCF members score top support By HAL GRIFFIN The widening gulf between the CCF top leaders, war-bent in sup- port of the Atlantic pact, U.S. in- tervention in Korea and dispatching of Canadian forces across the Pa- cific, and the desire for peace and democratic advance at home ex- pressed by the majority of CCF members and supporters became apparent here this week. As the Pacific Tribune went to press, delegates to the CCF natio- nal convention meeting in this city, held their first open sessions, but the central issue of intervention in Korea, expected to explode in a stormy debate, had not yet reached the floor. Nevertheless, the gulf was there, expressed in the open pro- posal of CCF top leaders for ful- ler Canadian participation in Am- erican intervention in Korea, and rank-and-file letters published in the CCF News strongly denoun- cing this policy. The CCF top leaders, with a skill evolved in thwarting the unity sentiments of a large section of their membership in the thirties, carefully prepared the stage for the convention.” - M. J. J. Coldwell’s shameless allegation, made in a statement to daily papers here and eagerly circu- lated throughout the country by the Canadian Press, that the Stockholm peace appeal “is a ruse to assist the Soviet Union in disarming the peoples of democratic countries in order that the Russians may continue their aggressive tac- tics. “If there is a ruse in the petition, which is simply aimed at uniting all of humanity for peace and life against atomic extermination, the ruse is that it smokes out any who har- bor plans or approve the criminal idea of unleashing atomic aggression,” a letter sent to Coldwell over the signature of Mary Jennison, executive secretary of the Canadian Peace Congress, pointedly stated. Coldwell ‘claimed in his statement: “The Stockholm Appeal is in line with Soviet ‘peace’ appeals to banish the atomic bomb — outside the Soviet Union. It is only being circulated outside the Soviet Union. It is unfortunate that it is not being circulated in Russia, too.” The Peace Congress’ crush- holm Appeal is being circu- lated in the Soviet Union — and has alteady been signed by leaders of the Soviet gov- ernment and 100 million So- viet citizens.
