Al4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 19, 1999 RCMP roadblocks out earlier this year ROADBLOCKS will be more concentrated, rum car- lier at night and share the resources of the Kitimat and Terrace RCMP detachments again thissummer, Constable J.R. Walker, who coordinates CounterAt- tack in Terrace, said that when the enhanced CounterAttack program started here in 1998 the Kitimat detachment wasn't large enough to cover all shifts. So Kitimat and Terrace of- ficers split five positions and ran With three focal and two Kitimat officers. Officers sign up for afier- hours shifts, which are paid for by ICBC. This year, the program runs four positions strong, with two officers from each detachment. Sometimes, Walker said, volunteers also help out when available. The four officers work in twos on alternate weekends. Officers work wherever they’re needed most, which, he said, is usually Terrace. On busy weekends such as Kitimat’s hillclimb July 1, officers set up in Kitimat in- stead of here. “It’s a very workable situation,” said Walker, ad- ding officers enjoy the op- portunity of working with nearby detachments. Last year, officers set up 101 road blocks in Terrace, checked 19,410 vehicles, and arrested six people for impaired driving. Police Beat Antifreeze and Listerine TERRACE RCMP report at least two residents were taken to hospital last week after drinking antifreeze and -Listerine. “There's a certain populace of individuals out there who will drink just about anything,” said Sgt. Darcy Gollan of the Terrace detachment, He said one resident walked into the RCMP detachment Monday, May 10 and asked to be taken to the hospital. Gollan also said stores should be aware that people may be buying giant Listerine bottles for their al- cohol content, Tom Novak of Mills Memorial Hospital said no tests have come back posi- tive as yet of antifreeze poisoning. Veterinarian robbed TERRACE RCMP are look- ing for the thief or thieves respousible for stealing potentially tethal drugs from a local vet, Sometime between 6:30 p.m. Tuesday May, 11 and 755 am. the next moming thieves forced their way into an unidentified veterinarian office. , They also stole a pair of veterinary clippers and. a small amount of cash after vet staff had gone home for the day, Constable Tanya Wilson of the Terrace RCMP detachment said the type of drugs stolen could not be identified because doing so may help the thief adminis- ter the drugs. Wilson is asking any one who has contact with any unknown or unidentified drugs to call the local ‘detachment at 638-7400. Woman injured A. KITIMAT woman was taken 1o hospilal May 12 with head and facial injuries after a single-vehicle -accl- dent on Hwy37 near Water Lily Bay road, Terrace RCMP officers say Alice Sheridan, 78, lost control of her car in the ¢ar- .. | ly afternoon near the high- way tumoff. The amount of damage to her vehicle is. wn 7 known, _ CRIME PREVENTION WEEK EXPECT TO see more CounterAttack roadblocks set up earlier in the evenings this year as RCMP use a new tactic to deter or catch drinking drivers. In Kitimat officers set up nine road blocks, checked 1,106 vehicles and arrested one person for impaired driving. Walker said roadblocks will be tailored into more effective locations such as the old bridge, Kalum Lake Drive, Thornhill and downtown Terrace. But, he said, officers will also use shock value and set up in unexpected locations, where motorists can’t spot them ahead of time, ‘'We want people to say, what in the heck are they doing here?” said Walker, Roadblocks will start two hours earlier at 7 p.m. and finish at 1 a.m, leaving drunk drivers off the hook two hours later than last year. Walker said most of Ter- trace’s drinking activity ends earlier than more urban centres. ‘Around 11 p.m. things really taper off,’* he said. By setting up carlier, Walker said officers hope increase coverage, They’li also be able to warn people before they Slart to drink and hopefully slop them from drinking and driving later in the night. CounterAttack roadblocks started in mid-April and will run almost every weekend during the summer months. iS Sun Life Mrs. Laurie Mitchell A Cliff Yolland Representative Representative 306-4546 Park Ave., 201-370 City Centre, Terrace, BC, V8G 1V4 Kitimat, BC, V8C 1Té Tel: (250}635-6146 Bus; (250)632-4747 Insurance Res: (250}635-3079 Fax: (250}632-5562 British = V8G-4K!
