Salmon are a precious gift that we all need to protect Dear Sir: I felt compelled to write this letter after reading the two. articles by. “Friends of Wild Salmon” in last month’s editions. I say compelled because as a First Nations individual, it is our sacred duty to pro- tect the ‘wildlife and wild salmon that are gifts from the Creator: . These gifts were given. ‘to our ancestors to sustain us and in return we were to be stewards of the lands and provide the protection that is © necessary to their survival. These are our cultural laws. _. We have all heard what damage these fish farms are capable of. Why are we not throwing ‘our considerable and col- - lective strength behind: the ' Organization that is trying to . protect our wild salmon? We need to wake up and % rally around “Friends of the Kitimat | is also a port location worthy of helping to promote — The railway connection to the rest of Canada does not : operate under threat of winter snow slides as the track from ; Dear Sir: CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - A7 The Mail Bag Wild Salmon” and make our voices heard. _ A note to sport fishermen and cannery workers: we all our salmon are killed off by these fish farms. For many years the publisher of The Kitimat Northern Sentinel, Howard Mitchell, promoted Kitimat as the better . deep-sea port in northern B.C. I believe his reasons are still good. Kitimat is 90 miles further inland. Both the approaches * and the port are deep and well sheltered, capable of hand- ing anything on the sea today. Alcan brings its concentrate in by ship and ships most of its product out the same way. Much commercial barge traffic goes through Kitimat. There _ is abundant space for expansion of the Kitimat port. ee LP model shows shot never knowing what it is to taste wild salmon are a few things that come to mind. From what | have read about these farms so far, the - loss of the precious resource’ Terrace to Prince Rupert does. a From an economic standpoint, I believe Terrace would fare better with a Kitimat port. For one thing there are people who live in Terrace but work in Kitimat; there could be many ~-more. I think it would better serve Terrace if you promoted: . Kitimat as the port for northwest Canada. is a distinct possibility. We cannot afford to let - the Minister of Fisheries continue to be so blasé about what will have a detrimental effect on us all. ; I wrote this letter two weeks before my brother » Larry left us so suddenly, but ' I did have a chance to talk to him about it. His words to me were, “if you believe . strongly about this then you should follow through, don’t » be complacent.” I intend to honour those words. >. Kym Guno, Kitwanga, B.C. : WS.
