based business conference
for new and existing entre-
preneurs,

THE COST of living in the north
just went up.

Telus received approval to hike north-
erm residential and business service rates
from the Canadian Radio-television
Telecommunications Commission

(CRTC) effective June 19.

Residential ‘customers will now: pay
$20.80 per month, up $1.85 from the pre-
vious $18.95 per month. -

And Telus: spokesperson, Doug Stra-
chan: forecasts that residential phone ser-
vice will continue to rise.

“ “Right: now’ service. is being. provided
below. cost,” said Strachan... “Residents
can expecta continual-increase in ser-
vice rates for at least another year.”

But while Terrace residents ‘may be
feeling the pinch of the increases, so are
local businesses. - -

Northern businesses will price hikes of
$3.90 for single phone line businesses and
$1.35 for multiline businesses.

All. this while Vancouver-based busi-
nesses enjoy a 11-16 per cent rate de-
crease,

Consumer advocate and executive dir-
ector of B.C. Public Interest Advocacy
Centre, Dick Gathercole believes that the
Vancouver business service rate de-
creases are a move by Telus to focus on
being competitive.

“There isn’t any competition up north.
They [Telus] are dealing with caplive
customers,” said Gathercole,

Telus is more concerned with business
customers in urban centres because there
is more money to be made and more
competition to be concerned about, said
Gathercole.

Instead of making northern residents
pay higher costs because of ‘where they
live, he advocates a “wires charge”,
which would see everyone pay a minimal
fee to provide equal service to all areas
in the province.

“Everyone should have equal access fo
telephone service,” said Gathercole. “We
must stop thinking that if you choose to
live up north it’s just too bad for you.”

The increases mark a 54 per cent hike
in basic telephone service since 1997
when Terrace residents paid $13.50 per
month.
