Children’s gift campaign needs help WITH DONATIONS from the com- munity lagging behind what's norm- ally contributed at this point in the season year, organizers of a local campaign have had issue an urgent plea for support. “We are just not getting the do- nations this year that we normally would have,” says Rosanne Pearce of Terrace Anti-Poverty Group Soc- iety. The society and its corporate partners run the Children’s Christmas Campaign, a program that matches donated gifts to the hundreds of local children and teens who register each year, People whe would like ta contri- bute can pick a gift tag from special Christmas trees at Zellers, the Bar- gain Shop, Saan and now Curves. The tags contain the first name, age and clothing size of a local needy child, and sometimes a specific gift request, Volunteers wrap and deliver the gifts in time for Christmas. “Our bank is a little bit broke. Terrace Anti-Poverty ensures that all the children get Christmas gifts. It doesn’t matter how many apply.” The society sent out letters so- liciting donations from local busi- nesses, but donations are down. “Businesses are really suffering. Those who contributed last year are not able to this year. It’s my hope things will pick up for them, as well.” As of late November, 75 families had signed up for the program. “I ex- pect that to double if not triple in the next few weeks.” ‘Last year, 500 children in 156 local families registered in the pro- gram.
