C2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 29, 1996 History repeats itself in Skeena Kitimat strength was again key to the NDP win here AS IT WAS in 1991, so it is in 1996, New Democratic Party candidate’ Helmut Giesbrecht has won ancther term in office. But, once again, he. needed Kitimat and the rural vote to doit... Giesbrecht lost the Terrace race, coming in with some’200 less votes: than Liberal can- didate Rick Wozney.- In Thornhill and rural Terrace, it was a tight contest between Wozney, Giesbrecht and Reform candidate Andy Burton. Ail three candidates showed strong support, each receiving between 750 and 800 votes. But in Kitimat, Giesbrecht broke away from the crowd, taking some 2,157 votes, 400 more than Wozney. Burton was left behind with 846. Giesbrecht was also strong in the Kitwanga area, taking some 284 votes, three times more than either Burton or Wozney could muster. The incumbent was further supported by ~ the Kitsumkalum and Kitimaat Village Reserves where he received nearly 94 per cent of the popular vote. In 1991, Giesbrecht took ithe Skeena riding with 5,597 votes, beating out Social Credit candidate Dave Parker by 831 ballots. This time around, Giesbrecht only took 5,147. ~Giesbrecht lost in Terrace then too, with Parker passing him by a slim 135 votes. Liberal candidale Juanita Hatton was third, picking up nearly half of her 1,629 votes here in her hometown. But it wasn’t so close in Kitimat where Giesbrecht blew by Parker for 852 votes, 152 more than the combined apposition could muster. Turnout was high in 1991, as 72.5 per cent of Skeena’s 16,828 eligible voters cast their ballots. That was five per cent higher than the previous election in 1986, This time the turn out was even greater, as 12,781 visited the ballot box, nearly 600 more than did four years earlier.
