The average wait is 26 months, aud some people don’t have that long. ‘Last year 22 people died in this province while wait- ing for a kidney,” says local Karen Reid, She donated a kidney to her husband Al in Septem- ber 1994, _ She’s encouraging people lo talk to their family about their wishes about organ donation. - [f only one per cent of the people who died last year in car accidents in British Columbia became organ donors, there would be no one on the transplant wait- ing list. ' Karen and Al were lucky that she was able to become a donor for him. : “T wasn’t even aware | could be a donor,’’ says Karen. Al had developed kidney failure as a result of being diabetic, _it had a dramatic impact on his life.
