B4 rerrace Review — Wednesday, March 14, 1990 Michelle Hendry ® best in B.C. by Bruce Mason _. Simon Fraser University : Michelle Hendry, Sport ‘B.C.’s 1989 university athlete of the-year, set Olympic-sized goals and_a world class code on the Caledonia Secondary basketball court of her home town,. Ter- race. Now she’s setting records as she realizes her dreams at Simon Fraser University. ‘‘] wanted to play for the Canadian national team,”’ ex- plains the 19-year-old, a B.C. all-star with the Caledonia Ker- modes two short years ago. “The competition gets more and more difficult but that just helps me become a better player. Although it gets hectic and hard somtimes, I’ve been, able to ke up the intensity needed to ach -ve my original goal.” Right now, Hendry is playing the games of her life. On Thursday, March 8, she scored 33 points in 25 minutes, making her top-scorer in an 87-55 defeat of Oregon’s Pacific University. — The previous week, Hendry was triple-teamed, but still scored 30 points, before thou- sands of wildly cheering fans in a 68-62 win over Western Wash- ington University. The victories place SFU in the National Women’s Basketball Tournament in Jackson, Ten- nessee, March 16, the best per- formance a basketball team has made in the university’s history. In leading the team to its best _ season ever, against universities and colleges from Alaska to Oregon, Hendry has consistently improved her already-impressive performance. The 6-foot-2, 156-pound Ter- race native was named NAIA district one player of the year for the second consecutive season. She led the league in scoring and field goal percentage — also for the second straight year. Hendry averaged more than 22 points a game and made over 62 percent of field goal shots. “She’s the best all-round player in our 25-year history,”’ beams Allison McNeill, head coach. “And best of all, she’s ony a sophomore. There are greater years ahead for her.” Hendry gives much of the credit to her high school coach Hugh Mackinnon. ‘There was never a down mo- ment playing for him," she recalls.. “No one could get a swelled head because he kept our’ minds on the game. And he “treated us like people, not machines.”’ Aside from her obvious talent, Hendry has much more going for her. | ‘She's a great example of a committed self-starter,’’ ex- plains McNeill. “She works hard, often on her own after practice, but is no prima donna. Instead, she’s got a great at- titude, is a team player and one of the most coachable athletes " J’ve ever had, quiet with an in- ‘ner little fire.”* ° _ The passion to excel also burns off-court in the class- -room. A good student in spite of Michelle Hendry Clan fifth Michelle Hendry poured in 33 points on March § as the Simon Fraser Clan ladies beat Pacific University of Seattle 87-55 to qualify for the N.A.I.A. championships on March 16 weekend at Jacksonville, Tennessee. The District One Clan’s win was their first ever over the rival champs from District Two and gave them a berth in the N.A.LA. small college finals. The Clan is ranked © fifth out of 16 teams. > long hours in the gym, Hendry majors in kinesiology, the study of body movements, and hopes to become a team trainer or physiotherapist. There are plans to play pro- fessionally, perhaps in Holland, original home of the Hendry family. For now, SFU ‘basketball is a priority, requiring at least two hours a day, including practice and weightlifting. Continuing to win in national finals and being selected All American would be ideal pres- ents for her 20th birthday later this month. But for Hendry, who doesn’t keep track of individual honors, team work is everything. ‘‘My ultimate goal is to go to the Olympics,’’ says Hendry, “but I’ll do it one game at a time, making my contribution to a group effort.” Theve is little doubt Michelle Hendry: will breakaway down the distance between Terrace and the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.
