YV3C 2A8 Dear Mayor Traboulay: Further to our conversation of Thursday, October 11, 1990 I am writing this letter, at your request, to detail the problems we are axperiencing Walking our children to Birchland Elementary School across Prairie Avenue at Toronto Street. On Wednesday, October 10, 1990, as I was walking 3 children to . Birchland School, we were very nearly run down as two cars, coming east along Prairie Avenue, decided not to stop for us. We were halfway across the crosswalk at the time. As others in the neighbourhood have related similar experiences I felt it was time to find out what options were available to us that would ensure a safer trip to and £rom school. During our discussion the options you suggested were as follows: adult crossing guard using children as crossing guards pedestrian controlled light illluminated crosswalk sign wooden "Child crossing" crosswalk sign 30 km/h zone eae nig aao om four observation that Prairie Avenue has become a "speedway" {3 right on target as this {s not the first time we have been ina . life-threatening situation at that intersection. I have witnessed cars coming west along Prairie accelerating to make the light. Cars coming eastbound through the light have accelerated through the light and are merging into one lane. The other problem we experience is those people who go around the cars who are stopped. All of these incidents are , occurring even though there is a painted crosswalk and posted "Schoo Crossing" signs. Obviously this is not enough. Mr. Urdahl, Secretary-Treasurer of the Coquitlam school Board, neh informed me that an adult crossing guard is not an option here. There are certain criteria they feel must be met before they will take money from the budget and we do not meet their criteria. w~ < PAGE “|
