ON OS ee Page BB - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 7, 1993 Be careful with flood debris Contributed by the Skeena Health Unit Flood waters are usually .con-. taminated and should be handled accordingly. After contact with farmyards, manure piles, refuse. heaps, out-: houses and other sources-of dis- case, flood walets become heavi- ~~ ly contaminated and ‘create poten- lial health hazards. Persons’ should not flooded homes until cleanup has been completed and arrangements have been made for a supply of safe water and for satisfactory, disposal of humarl wastes and garbage. If you are in any doubt about these issues, contact your local Health Unit. If your. home is in an area served by a public water-supply system, it is very probable that the water supply will be safe. If it is not, you will be notified local- ly. Jf your water supply comes from your own well, you must as- sume that the water is con- laminated until bacteriological tests show the water to be safe, If the water in the well. appears to be clear, it may be used following - boiling. or disinfection by chlorination. For example, : one’ drop of household bleach per litre of clear water, two drops for - cloudy water and let stand for 30 minutes. - All movable ‘flirnishings should be taken outside. All woodwork should be thoroughly. cleaned with soap and water, Upholstered furniture that has been in-contact with water: should be left outside io dry thoroughly (direct sunlight has a strong disinfecting powcr). The floors and surfaces in home that have been fiooded should be ~ thoroughly cleaned and scrubbed as soon as possible after the water has receded. Afier surfaces have been cleaned of mud and silt, they stould be washed with a. sterilizing ‘chloride of lime solu-. tion (mix one pound of chloride of lime to six-10 gallons of water). Commercial laundry bleaches containing five per cent tye ‘bas ‘occupy available ¢t chlorine may be used as _an alternative (mix.two quarts of bleach to six-10 gallons of water). “In pumping --basements, - care must be faken not to pump the “basements too quickly: water in the.’surrounding ‘soil “may cause the collapse of basement walls - and/or . uplifting - “of basement floors. Once the water has left the . cnt, immediately “remove © all the accumulated. silt and. mud. “This may require the use of a hose, buckets of waler, and rough _ Scrubbing. . * Remove all portable effects (such as stored furniture, etc.) En- courage drying. by opening all widows; if possible, apply heat ‘via a furnace or stove. All sur- faces that have been exposed to flood waters. should be dis- infected by brushing on a chloriné solution as - described above, Cleanup and disinfecting proce- dures : should extended to all sheds, garages and other build- ings where goods are stored. In particular, ulcnsils used: -for: the preparation, preservation or storage of food should be thoroughly washed ‘soaked in a. — chlorine solution. High water will have . flooded . outhouses pils, making’ a .poten- ‘tially dangerous ‘source of con-- tamination to local water sup- plies. If the outhouse building _ “remains ‘in place it may. be used ” as soon as-the water has left the surface of the ground. But in order to eliminate the tisk of contaminating the water fable, it is advisable to empty the contents of one pound of fresh ‘chloride of lime (ar two quarts of five per cent bleach) into the pit every three or four day for as long as water remains in the pit. If the outhouse building has been washed away, an new one should be built as soon as possible. Open outhouse pits should be covered ‘to prevent accidents. -In most instances, flooding will not seriously affect septic tanks. ‘Tt may, however, cause damage to the sewage-disposal field if the syslem waters recede below the distribu- is used before flood - Mik’ scott SKEENA REFORM PARTY CANDIDATE NO NEW TAXES! _.....CUT GOV'T SPENDING! .....
