Local Scouters who received this honor are John Morgan, Peter Haigh, Alex Mit- chell, Per Halverson, Linda Perry, Sandra Wilson and Carol Leclerc. by Tod Strachan According to local Scouter Sandra Wilson, this ‘very in- tense’? course was run by 18 in- structors and attracted 37 Scouters and their families from as far away as the Queen Charlottes, Fort St. John and Williams Lake. She says that while the Scouters were atten- ding the Wood Badge course, 105 children and spouses were kept busy with activities such as hiking, canoeing, games, crafts, water skiing and overnight camps. The Scouting movement was founded in England in 1907 by Lord Baden-Powell and rapidly grew as a world-wide movement, Based on his book, ‘‘Scouting for Boys’’, Baden-Powell held his first ‘‘experimental’’ Scout camp in the 108-acre Gilwell Park which was purchased with a donation from Mr. W. McLaren. Located by the Epp- ing Forest near London, England, Gilwell Park has since become the ‘‘spiritual center’’ of the Scouting movement. After its introduction to Canada in 1908, younger boys who wanted to join the move- ment formed the Wolf Cub pro- gram in 1916, and a year later, the Rover program for young men was introduced. The Ven- tures started in 1966 for young men between Scout and Rover age and in 1971, Beavers were started to include five-to-seven- year olds. More than 45,000 dedicated adult volunteers make the Scouting movement work and through comprehensive training programs such as the Wood Badge II, have been taught the leadership and _ instructional skills required to use self-testing activities to teach young Cana- dians confidence, self-respect and good citizenship. The Gilwell neckerchief bears a patch of the McLaren tartan in recognition of Gilwell Park patron, W. McLaren, and accor- ding to Wilson, ‘‘Our Scouters are very proud to be wearing them because they stand for hard work and carry a lot of history and meaning.”’ The Wood Badge II is the se- cond level in Scouters’ training and Wilson says ‘‘very en- thusiastic’? local Scouters are looking forward to putting their new knowledge to work. She says Scouting registration will take place next Wednesday in the E.T. Kenney gymnasium from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Anyone looking for more information on Scouting can phone Sandra Wilson at 638-1796.
