TERRACE STANDARD [eeu | Business RevIEw | Market key to a booming downtown, says expert THE IDEA of combining the farmers’ market with a downtown revitalization can be great for both downtown business and the market, says 8 University of North- em B.C. expert on farmers’ markets, “It makes all kinds of sense,’” says Dr. John Curry, a UNBC associate professor of environmental Studies and former profes-: sional planner. Curry was invited here to observe the local market and listen in on the debate be- tween market reps and city officials over possible relocation of the market. Market organizers don’t want to move, but city offi- cials see it as a chance to create more civic space closer to downtown and get the market off valuable land on Davis Ave, Curry said towns that combine a town square or other civic space close to downtown with a market have experienced big bene- fits, And he said the city’s planning department is right in thinking better links can be created between downtown business and the market. “There’s an extremely strong link between a farm- ers’ market located in a downtown area and in- creased reiail activity in businesses in the market dis- trict,"* Curry said. “It’s something extremely posi- tive that can help your downtown business com- munity.” Hundreds or even thou- sands of people are drawn into the downtown core to attend the market, he said, and a portion of those are guaranteed to also wander through nearby shops, It can also serve as a tegional draw bringing out- of-town shoppers into the downtown. ; The market is also an im- portant training ground for new entrepreneurs, he noted, providing them with a low-risk venue to test their business ideas. That’s particularly valu- able to a community like Terrace that has staked its success in recent years on its growth as a commercial centre for the northwest.
