A grandma for the first time

THIS WEEK I’m pleased to
tell you of a happy new ar-
rival —- a beautiful son to
carry on the Bernardo name.

Duncan Smith Bemardo
was born Sept. 21 at 8:13
p.m. al St. Paul’s Hospital in
Vancouver.

Proud parents Joseph
Bernardo and Sharlein
Smith Bemardo, both law-
yers in Vancouver, are
thrifled, while Giusappina
Bemardo of Terrace is
delighted to be a grandma
for the first time.

She was in Vancouver the
day her grandson was born,
along with Joe’s sister An-
nina,

Baby Duncan is the first

‘grandchild on both sides of
‘tbe family. Needless to say
-he will get a lot of attention
“and love.

plans for his education, his
grandma says.

The lodge, formerly an
abandoned nurses residence
north of Mills Memorial
hospilal, was renovated by

the Elks and opened in
1994,

The 14-unit hostel pro-
vides low-cost rental hous-
ing for families and friends
who want to be with loved
ones who are at Mills
Memorial Hospital. Patients
can also stay at the hostel
the night before minor oper-
ations,

During the last three years
of operation the 5,500 users
of the lodge have come
from the Nass Valley, Wat-
son Lake, Prince Rupert, the
Queen Charlotte Islands,
and Kemano.

Visitors even included a
couple from California, The
husband suffered a heart at-
tack when he and his wife
were shipwrecked on the
Charlottes. The couple com-
mented that such accom-
modation wasn’t available
in their state.

Of the many fundraising
efforts the Elks have done,
those that stand out the most
for members are the New
Years dances held in the old
Civic Centre.

The May Day parade, of
many years ago, and figure
skating events, are also re-

membered fondly.
Over the years the Elks’
home base has also

changed. The Elks have
gone from meeting in the
Odd Fellows Hall on
Lakelse Ave., to an army
building on Sparks St. to the
present lodge building on
Tetrault. St.

The Elks thank the com-
munity for their support
over the past 40 years and
they welcome new mem-
bers.
