It is this situation which points up the need for all-inclusive unity and country-wide solidarity of all organ- ized workers to beat back the planned employer-government war against labor — the provider of all services and the producer of all our wealth. _ This Labor Day let us dedicate our ef- forts to win full employment, a job or an income for all Canadians as a right. A shorter workday as well as a shorter work-wéek without any reduction but with an increase in take-home pay. A vastly increased living standard by utiliz- ing to the full our rich resources, passing on the result of the new technology and increase in productivity to the working people — their rightful share for it is their labor which produces the increased wealth. Let us resolve to put an end to a situation. where banks, big corporations and speculators can reap a bonanza of profits, with government connivance, at the expense of those who do the work, and produce the hee leaving millions i verty and want. oie us Penis this Labor Day to fight for the extension of democratic and civil rights, to join in struggle for a united and independent Canada based upon an equal and voluntary partnership of our two nations — French and English; a foreign policy for peace and peaceful co- existence with the socialist world, and with the right of all peoples to determine i n destiny. ee BREE nined. united, educated and informed class can exert an ever- growing influence in our society, widen the front of opposition to policies of mo- nopoly and of its governments. By its militant and united struggle it can win new and dynamic policies in the interest le. . : oe uae federal election monopoly will spare no efforts to promote, unify and lavishly finance reactionary right- wing politicians with the aim of pushing politics to the Right. But the victories won in collective bargaining and through hard fought strikes will be short-lived indeed if the political candidates of the bosses and their parties are elected to dominate our parliament and legislatures, Our great and growing trade union movement has the strength and the in- fluence to reverse this process. It can, by independent class political action, rally the masses of working people into a demo- cratic alliance against monopoly and for common objectives that are in the inter- ests of the people. In this coming federal election it can work for and elect a large progressive bloc of MP’s, including New Democrats and Communists, to champion the cause of labor, and to put people’s interests be- fore monopoly profits. The trade union movement ean. and must become the rallying center for a mass democratic movement for progress. It must press for great new industries and all-round development of our abun- dant resources under public ownership and control. Only in this way can we be masters of our destiny, win jobs for all, equality for our women, and to fulfill the ideals and expectations of our young generation. Only in this way can we win genuine independence. Only the rallying of all democratic, na- tional, anti-monopoly and anti-imperialist forces can free Canada from the domi- nation of the big corporations — foreign and domestic — and align our country with the new and rising world of sociai- ism and of world peace. This is the challenge and the opportuni- ty that confronts Canadian labor on this Labor Day, 1972.
