lead the revolutionary struggle for social trans-
formation. The prophets are wrong on both
counts.

The working class now numbers over 500 mil-
lion, as compared to about 10 million in the mid-
dle of the 19th century and about 30 million at
the turn of the century. The antagonism between
capital and labor, the class struggle between the
working class and state-monopoly capitalism is
the main characteristic feature of social and po-
litical life today and the class struggle is sharp-
er than it was 125 years ago when the Commu-
nist Manifesto was printed.

Socialism has taken root in one third of the
world. A socialist world system has come into
being, led by Communist Parties.

The working class, as Marx and Engels saw
with such clarity, was at the head of the social-
ist revolutions that resulted in the achievement
of socialism on three continents. It is the class
which is leading the state in the building of the
new society, creating the new men and women
and preparing the con
the highest form of human society yet known.

ing. to his ability and to each according to his
needs.

It is to the eternal condemnation of the ultra-
left that they have the audacity to mark the
125th anniversary of the Communist Manifesto
and at the same time spew their venom at the
working class of the Soviet Union and other so-
cialist countries who are pbuilding the socialist
society advanced by Marx and Engels in the

Manifesto.

The developments in the past 125 years indi-
cate that no other theory has had such an influ-
ence and revolutionary impact on world events
as the first Communist Program. At the begin-
ning it embraced a few hundred people; today
it embraces 50 million members of Communist
Parties. The Communist movement has become

Attempts are made to set Lenin against Marx

and Engels on the question of the role of the
revolutionary party. This is an old trick of coun-
terposing the young Marx to the mature Marx,
or Marx against Engels. There is no foundation
for these attempts. Marx and Engels fully un-
derstood the role of a Communist Party. They
saw the dialectical interaction. between class

and a revolutionary Party and that is why they
wrote in the Manifesto: :

The communists have no interests separate
and apart from those of the proletariat as a
whole and that in various stages of develop-
ment which the struggle of the working class
against the bourgeoisie has to pass through,
they always and everywhere represent the in-
terests of the movement as a whole, Com-
munists fight for the immediate objectives
and interests of the working class, but in the
interest of the movement of today they also
promote its future, its ultimate goals and ideas.

One hundred and twenty-five years have

passed since the Communists came out with the
slogan:

“Workingmen of all countries unite!”
Under this slogan Marx and Engels combined

national interests and internationalism.

Under this slogan scientific socialism has been

striving to achieve a system of social relations
in which man would not be anenemy to man, in
which nation would not be an enemy to nation.
the state would not stand opposed as an alien,
hostile force, and exploitation, war and national
oppression would be ended for all time. Marx
and Engels elevated these aims from the realm
of utopia into the realm of science and defined
the scientific strategy to achieve them in life.

Lenin’s estimation of the Communist Mani-
festo is still the most comprehensive:

“With the clarity and brilliance of genius,
‘this work outlines a new world conception,
consistent materialism, which also embraces
the realm of social life; dialectics, as the most
comprehensive and profound doctrine of deve-
lopment; the theory of the class struggle and
the world historic revolutionary role of the
proletariat—the creator of a new communist
society.” :
