Opinion poll finds north in favour of recall method | NEARLY 60 per cent of northemers support the idea of recalling MLAs, says a poll commissioned by the Canadian Taxpayers Feder- ation. The federation, which is helping prepare the ground- work for campaigns to recall Skeena NDP MLA Helmut Giesbrecht and Prince George cabinet minister Paul Ramsey, welcomed the number, “The public is not going to sign a recall petition for the sake of signing a peti- tion,’’ said federation exec- utive director Troy Lanigan, “The public will only sign if there is just cause,”’ That northem result was taken from a province-wide poll conducted between Oct. Recall organizers must sign up 40 per cent of the people who were on the voters list for the last provincial election. 7 and Oct. 9. Tt asked, ‘“‘As you may be aware, there is now legish- tion to allow constituents to recall their MLA and cause a new election to be held. If a petition was circulated in your riding to recall your MLA, would you sign it?” Across B.C., the response was 45 per cent ‘yes’, 35 _per cent ‘no’ and 20 per cent undecided, In the north, ‘yes’ was the response of 59 per cent of those polled while 31 per cent said ‘no’ and 12 per cent were undecided. The federation is promot- ing recall based on state- ments made by the NDP government before the last provincial election which indicated the budget was balanced. Information released after the NDP win revealed the budget was in a severe deficit. “The poll shows that a majority of British Colum- bians support the use of tecall to hold the govem- ment accountable for their budget lies,” said Lanigan. Recall organizers must Group wants vote change A GROUP HAS been formed to look at different ways for voters to choose the people they send to the provincial legislature, The current system of first-past-the-post doesn’t work because it gives politi- cal parties 100 per cent of the power even though they may have gathered a minori- ty of voter support, says the Electoral Change Coalition , of B.C, This system is based on parties forming govern- ments according to the num- ber of electoral seats ‘their candidates win. But moves to change the syslem gathered force last: year after the provincial election. Although the NDP received fewer votes in total than did the Liberals, they were retumed (o govern- ment because they won more seats. One suggested method is proportional representation in which the percentage of popular vote a party achieves across the province is tied to the number of seats it has in the legislature. Another method is allow- ing voters to list their pref- erences while casting bal- lots. It’s based on candidates receiving atleast 50 per cent of the vote. That’s achieved by eliminating the candidate who receives the least votes each time ballots are counted. The second prefer- ence of those who voted for this candidate are then taken and assigned to the remain- ing candidates. This continues until one candidate gathers at least 50 per cent of the vote. The alliance wants first to tell voters about alternatives and then to hold a referendum to determine if V8G 3Z9 CITADEL TECHNICAL SERVICES 4659 MARTEN DRIVE TERRACE, 8.C, PHONE: (250) 638-6375 COMPUTER NETWORK ENGINEER -PAULLE GRAS APPLE COMPUTER TECHNICIAN Special Shanks Honourable mention to Jack and Rosemary Radelet for their outstanding support.
