Bi2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, December 4, 1996 Sports Scope ee SENIOR LADIES curling champs are heading down to the Provincial Finals. That's Judy Degearness, Denise Sawtell, Bibbi Dozzi and Elaine Anderson. Senior ladies take Zones OUR TERRACE senior ladies curlers rocked the curling club two weekends ago — winning the Zone Championships, and setting themselves up for a berth in the Provin- cial Championships. The ladies beat out a very tough Smithers squad, taking two games in a chaitlenging best-of- three games series. “Everyone played very well,”’ says curler Bibbi Dozzi. “‘We we very pleased,”’ That win means the ladies will be leaving this weekend to head down to the Provincial Finals in Surrey, which run from Games need volunteers There is a pressing need for volunteers and billets for the Northem BC Winter Games. Billeting director, Pal- winder Thandi, says billets are urgently needed. Thus far they have only a small fraction of the total number required. An expected 1,500 athletes under the age of nineteen will need to be housed for three nights with 4 minimum of two athletes in each home. The requirements are simple. You don’t need rooms or even beds. Floor space with cots or foamies is suffi- cient, Athletes are responsible for their own bedding. All you need is a place for them to spread their slecp- ing bags. If you have a rec room with lots of space you could turn your home into a mini athfete’s village. You will be responsible for picking up the athletes the eve- ning of February 6, providing meals, transportation to and from the sports venues and dropping the athletes off at the departure point on Sunday, February 9. The athletes are minors so cach bilfeting family will undergo a criminal record check by the RCMP. This is for the protection of the athletes. The check is com- pletely confidential with only the RCMP having access to the information. Those unpaid parking and speeding tickets won't prevent you from doing, your bit. Volunteers are needed for the Games, Suc Mulvahill, the Social Events Director is looking for ten more hostess volunteers to sign up in the next week. The re- quirements are simple. You need to be able to commit for the weekend and be comfortable dealing with the public, Fill out a volunteer form and drop it off al the Games office on Lazelle or call 638-1997 for more in- formation. If you have any interest in working security for the Games volunteers are needed in that directorate. You don’t need to be a police officer to be a security volunteer. If you are interested fill out a form and December 9th to 15th. somebody will contact you. I m looking forward The Northern BC Winter Games need your help and to it” says Dozzi. | this is the time to come forward, Do your part by bec- “We're all very ex- | oming a billet or a volunteer. cited.” Ski for beans SKIING IS free at Shames today if there is enough snow. The mountain was going to open last weck but despite a last-minute snowfall there still wasn’t enough glorious powder for a decent base. So today hopefully will be the day. Skiing. is free all day — although skiers are asked to bring a non- perishable food item to donate to the Salvation Army food bank. To find out the ski condilions, call Shames’ snow lines at 638-8754 or 638-8775, Indoor soccer tourney INDOOR SOCCER zone playdowns will be taking place this weekend in Kitwanga. Both men’s and women’s groups will be competing to find teams to represent our Zone at the Northern BC Winter Games. Terrace Indoor Soccer representative Lorenzo Campanelli says since Terrace is the host city, we auto- matically get a host team, However, Terrace teams will also be at the playdowns in hopes of one of them taking the zone championships. That would send two Terrace leams to the games. But first they have to get by com- pelition from neighbouring towns. “We're expecling some tough competition from Kitimat and Kitwanga,”’ Campanelli says. BC Games skips a year NEXT YEAR, the annual BC Summer and Winter Games will switch to being held every two years to save the province money. But the good news is that the Northern BC Winter Games, the Seniors Games and the BC Disability Games will continue to be annual events, Changing the BC Games to run every two years will save the province some $750,000 annually. The new structure means the 1998 Winter Games will be moved to the year 2000, but the {997 Winter Gaines will still take place in Campbell River and the 1997 and 1998 Summer Games will continue in Burnaby and Pitt Meadows as scheduled. Summer skiing WATER SKIING will be a new event af ihe BC Summer Games next year in Burnaby, and our North by Northwest Zone will be sending ten competitors, Eighty water skiers, barcfooters and wakeboarders representing the province’s eight zones will converge on Bumaby’s Bunson Lake from July 24-27. Our zone teps will be selected at a ski run-off to be held some- time before the June 20 deadline. Scoring at the games will be based on an overall team effort to take pressure away from individuals. The event is designed as a developmental tournament for skiers entcring a competitive level. Women’s hockey camp THE NORTHWEST Zone hockey camp for females wishing to be part of the BC Winter Games will take place in Granisie, December 14-15. Interested players must be under 18, and registered with BC Amateur Hockey. The camp will be used to instruct and evaluate players to represent the northwest zone at the BC Winter Games in Campbell River Feb- mary 20-23, 1997. Cost is $50 and registration forms are available from the Terrace Minor Hockey Associa- tlon, or call (250)847-5802, ; Basketball begins CAL BOYS basketball season begins this weekend with two games against College Heights from Prince George, Coach Cam Mackay says the PG squad is ranked number one in the province so it should be a real challenge for Caledonia. The action will take place at the Cal gym, 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday nights, Cal won both of their exhibition games two weekends ago against Mount Elizabeth and Hazelton.
