The seven — Greg Delaronde, Fred Dunn, Stephen Fladhamer, Blair Pilot, Bob Shouers, Ernie Vanderbroek and Remi Vienneau — had been trying to tow out a snowmobile that: had broken down at around 3 p.m. Feb, 2, But a storm was coming in and the snowmobilers soon. found themselves in zero visibility conditions, according: - to Terrace Search and Rescue coordinator Gord Sweeting. ‘The weather was very bad,’’ he said. ‘‘They couldn’t see a thing.” ; After one machine went down a steep embankment, he said, they decided to abandon efforts to get out that night. They found the second. of two snowmobile club cabins on the ~ mountain and stayed there. Sweeting said the cabin was equipped with lanterns and a wood-burning stove. _ “They. were quite comfor- table,” he added. ‘‘They had warmth, food and light. So they just stayed put there until the storm lifted.’’ The next day other snowmobile club members mounted the search, which was coordinated by Search and Rescue. Sweeting said the storm hampered efforts, adding it took all of Feb. 3 for searchers to reach the second cabin and find the missing snowmobilers. The missing men were. all safely back in Terrace by 9 p.m, that night. The area ‘they were snowmobiling in is just east of | Lava Lake, 61km north of Ter- race, It was the second time in as many months search and rescue volunteers were called out in response to a snowmobiling in- cident. Last month two local snowmobilers were killed when they were buried in an avalan- che on Thornhill Mountain. “HOW TO BE A LOCAL HERO rt oon _= , BEA BUSY BODY = Local Heroes know that when the need is there, even the busiest people have time to help. = They know that volunteering i is one of life’s = SA wns rewarding experiences. ts, eZ Bea Loeal Hero. | a ; : . * Ana nial pray ySFaEO te neal into .
