In 1979, the plucky little French-Canadian won three Grand Prix events and finished second to Ferrari team-mate Jody Scheckter in the world driving championship, a record unprecedented in Canadian motor racing history. In the annual year-end poll conducted by The Canadian Press, sports writers and sportscasters picked Villeneuve as a clear winner of the Lionel Conacher Award presented annually to Canada's top male athlete. The award, in the form of a plaque, honors the late Lionel Canacher, named Canada's male athlete of the half century in 1950. Downhill skier Ken Read of Calgary was a distant second with Bryan Trottier of New York Islanders, the National Hockey League's top scorer last season, third. Villeneuve, normally calm, poised and professional under pressure, admitted he was excited about the media voting. "I’m very surprised," he said, ‘‘and very happy, af course.”’ Still, the Berthierville, Que., native wanted to he sure just how widespread his popularity was; “That's for the whole of Canada, eh? Not just English Canada or French Canada?”’ Reassured that the honor was bestowed following a Canadawide poll of writers and broadcasters and reflected the overall feeling of the media in general, there was a noticeable sigh. “T guess that puts me in pretty good company, eh?” he said when told of some of his predecessors since the ° GIRLS : LADIES ~e . e GENTS @isoin the Club tor® @ writing, Phoning and meeting many @ respectable Girls, rd] Ladies or Gentiemen, @ et very easy way, for e new Friends: or Marriage!
