The Early Pullets

“The: fortunate poultryman is
the one who has.a fine lot of ear-
‘ly-hatched pullets to show at the
close of the season’s work. It is
‘rather a hard proposition to geta

/ lot of these early hatched birds,

for we all know that the fertility
is lower during the months of
January and February than al-
most any other months. How-
ever when one is able to hatch
during February and March, they
are well repaid when they get a
strong bunch of chicks, When
these chicks get the best of at-
tention they are in fine condition
for the fall shows and for breed-
ing purposes for another year.
1In‘faet an early hatched pullet
is worth much more for fancy
purposes than one that is hatched
even during May. They get the
size and are in fine condition us-
ually.

These pullets should have the
best’ of care during the hot days
of summer. Some shade: should.
be provided for them, and they
should: be given all the green
food that they will eat. Cleanti-
ness in-both coops and hoppers i is
quite. essential. Now ‘and - then
where there is some neglect, the
lice and mites will get in their
work; and before you realize it

may tell your neighbor that your
pullets are laying. .

It is very unwise to get them
to do this for they are then apt
to shed their feathers and.not get
back to laying condition for sev-.
eral months. It is better to feed
them for growth and size and
then later in the fall begin to feed
| for egg production. .. To be. sure
now and then some of them will
start laying. even though they
are not fed: especially for. this.
This. is unavoidable, but.do.not
purposely endeavor ,to- get. them
to lay at too early an age. After
a pullet begins to lay she- does
not grow a great deal; though of
course. she ‘will broaden’ out and
mature. The birds that are ‘fed
growing foods’ will keep on grow-
ing until:they ‘are’ full weight,
While it-is'not the! height of wis-
dom’ to get the birds too large,
yet. one rather prides” himself on
large. birds of a breed. “One can
notice this i in: Leghorns; -one.- will.

with their. birds. for years past

that one may select to-day almost,
any! variety of: ‘fowl-“and ‘find

strains that are excellent for ege||.

make the selection of the’ breed
and wariety. according’ to your

bird, or for. some particular: color.
