But I would like to say that 37 years ago the people of Spain learned, with great sorrow, and with some surprise, that the rest of the world didn’t rise up in indigna- tion when their democratically- elected government was very brutally deposed by a fascist regime. We’ve had a lot more history go by in those 37 years. We’ve seen what has happened in Greece and in other coun- tries. And-let us this time, in 1973, after the events in Chile, be very firm in our resolve, and let us cry out as one that it won’t happen again.” Father Gregory Baum, St. Michael’s ‘College, spoke of “these days of misery (when) all of us are discovering that the world is} divided between the rich and the poor, between the rich nations and the poor na- tions . . .” and, relating this to Chile, foresaw that “the powers of evil will be utterly destroy- eda Allende’s Crucifixion A Jesuit priest from St. Regis College, Father Richard Roach, shared the words of.a fellow priest who recently returned to Chile, and said that the Chris- tian symbols of redemption “translate in our day, into . support of liberation . . . an effort to buy men and women back from the slavery of oppres- sion.” Father Roach urged North Americans to “look how they For solidarity with Chile Canadians, from every walk of life of all political persuasions, who cherish democratic liberties and the right of a‘people to a government of their own choos- ing, to support ‘the people of Chile in their struggle against the army junta. By BERT WHYTE “The overthrowing of Sal- vador Allende’s government was the culmination point of the subversive actions of Chilean reaction,” said a statement by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Central Commit- tee, concerning the military coup in Chile. “Backed by foreign imperial- ist forces throughout all three years of the Popular govern- in all countries as if born i THEY RECEIVE INSTRUCTIONS aN AGAINST CHILE By Pablo Neruda But we have to see behind all these, there is something behind the traitors and the gnawing rats, an empire which sets the table, and serves up the nourishment and the bullets. They want to repeat their great success in Greece. Greek playboys at the banquet, and bullets for the people in the mountains: we'll have to hang, of the new Victory of Samothrace, we'll have to destroy kill, lose men, sink the murderous knife held to us from New York, we'll have to use fire to break the spirit of the man who was emerging from the earth that had been splashed with blood. We have to arm Chiang and the vicious Videla, give them money for prisons, wings so they can bomb their own populations, give them a hand-out, a few dollars, and they do the rest, ‘they lie, bribe, dance on the dead bodies and their first ladies wear the most expensive minks. The suffering of the people does not matter: copper executives need this sacrifice: facts are facts: the generals retire from the army and serve as vice-president of the Chuquicamata Copper Firm, and in the nitrate works the ‘ decides with his trailing sword how much the natives may mention when they apply for a raise in wages. Everybody knows; but everybody has to know that his blood will fertilize the soil of all Latin America, of all the world!” Africa and Chile Jojo Salugie, African National Congress, said, ‘Indeed, the news of the death of Allende, came as-a shock to us, and I am sure .. . to the people in South Africa. Our sadness at the news of Allende,” he said, “was fol- lowed immediately with the death — the shooting down, the massacre — of 11 of our com- rades striking for higher wages in the mines of South Africa. “The struggle in Chile will continue; the struggle in South Africa will continue; the strug- gle all around the world, against imperialism, fascism and racism will continue. Although people die, although we are set back, we in Africa, in South Africa .. . people all around the world have this to say: Amandhla ngwethu! (Power to the people!) Miriam May, Voice of Wo- men, reminded the audience that, “The Voice of Women has long been known for its stand against war and violence ... We urge all of you here tonight,” she said, “to either write or phone Trudeau that. the Cana- dian government should not sup- port the military junta in Chile.” Acted for Imperialism Speaking for the Communist Party of Canada, John Bizzell pin-pointed the source from which originated the “brutal, fascist-inspired coup,” which was “acted out by Chilean arm- ed forces on behalf of U.S. im- perialism . . .” The resistance, which is now growing in Chile, “demands of every democratic and peace-loving Canadian .. . every solidarity action they can mount.” William Longridge, “repres- enting the president of the To- ronto Labor Council, Donald Montgomery,” called the death of Dr. Allende “a tremendous blow to the progressive forces and the trade union movement,” and urged that “the answer to achieving a better society is unity, solidarity and action.” Frank Showler, International Committee to Free South Viet- namese prisoners from Deten- tion, Torture and Death, said that members of his committee, “concerned about the freedom of political prisoners in South Vietnam, of course, do not want to see any more political prison- ers now, in Chile. We are con- cerned about political prisoners wherever they may be,” he said. “The pattern of fascist dic- tatorship is not unknown to modern Greece,” stated Angelo Giannakopoulos, Committee for the Restoration of Democracy in Greece. Recent events: in Chile had left a strong and bit- ter taste with Greeks, he said. “When a fascist dictatorship interrupts the democratic pro- cess, it means executions, tor- ture, imprisonment. It means the day turns to night. “It is our duty,” said the spokesman for Greek patriots, “all democratic-minded people ... . to intensify our efforts to attack dictatorships all over the world. The Greek people as well as the Chilean people need Canadian support,” he said. Eryl Roytenberg, Social Action Committee, Unitarian Church, welcomed the participants and audience to the church; and John Morgan reported a kind offer to replace the colored panes broken from the doors by the attacks of hoodlums — to replace them in memory of Dr. Allende. Venceremos! A collection totalling $400 was handed over to the Cana- dian Committee for Solidarity with Democratic Chile. The evening ended with the militant playing and singing of the Chilean national anthem, Venceremos! (We Shall Win!) Hundreds left, more dedicated than before to preventing Cana- dian recognition of the junta, determined to continue the struggle for the restoration of Chilean democracy.
