THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM C 0 UJ N C | [ MEMORANDUM JUN 27 1983 TO: B. Kirk, . June 16, [983 City Administrator FROM: F.E. Peters., P, Eng., City Engineer SUBJECT: Kingsway Reconstruction - Public Works Committee, June 14th, 1983 RECOMMENDATION: That the scope of the project included in the 1983 budget *or Kingsway Raconstruction trom Witson to Mary Hill Road be increased to inciude the completion of the east side of Kingsway setween Wilson and Tyner with the City's share of the cost to be ‘ncluded within the $190,000 already allocated in tne 198% budget. BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS: Because it took us approximately two years to get the B.C. Hydro poles movad from the shoulder of Kingsway between Wilson and Tyner, we were not able to complete the road widening project as originally approved and budgeted in 1980. By the time the poles vere moved, the Department of Highways approval tor cost sharing had lapsed and the pavement was not completed. There is some pavement distress evident at tne east edge of the new construction and this is due to the heavy traffic travelling close to the edge of the aavement without a curb to provide edge support. Now that we have detailed engineering and a start toa construction of the section of Kingsway between Witson and Mary Hilt Road, we have done a more accurate estimate which indicates that the cost of construction will be approximately $297,000. A total of $380,000 was budgeted. Fifty percent of the final cost is recoverable from the Department of Hignways. The Committee recommends that we extend the scope of the Include the section which was left over from This extension is estimated to cost $38,000. The total estimatad cost of the project therefore would be approximately $335,000 which is still well under the budgeted amount. The quantities estimated In our application to the Department of Highways for cost sharing are sufficient that we can include this amount without exceeding the approved quantities. This is our opportunity to combine the two Projects and to get cost sharing on the teftover portion of work as well as the work which was approved this year. F.E. Peters., P. Eng.,.
