IPM/A -13- during cold and wet weather when turf is semi-dormant and unable to recover from heavy use. It is recommended that ail coaches and managers (and players, if possible) be required to attend one briefing session on turf care prior to start of the league season. It is hoped that by educating users of the fields on the relationship between improper use of the turf and the establishment of weeds, unnecessary wear on the turf can be minimized. I. Spot-renovate areas in athletic fields where weed populations currently exceed tolerance levels. _ Renovation of small-to-medium areas of weedy turf can be accomplished without the use of herbicides by utilizing the following method. Scalp the existing grass and weeds off the soil in late winter. A mower set at 1/2 inch or a sod-cutter can be used to accomplish this. Cultivate the soil shallowly (2") and allow weed seeds to germinate. Cultivate shaliowly to til] under the germinated weeds when they are 2” to 3” tall. If the area is extremely weedy, alTow-a second round of weed germination to occur and turn weeds under. This process reduces the supply of weed seeds jn the germination zone and gives newly-sown grass seed a competitive edge.
