Faye was born on Jan. 28, 1898 in Washington. She passed away peace- fully at Terraceview Lodge on August 23, at the age of 98. She had melanoma. Faye was the grandaughter of pioneer steamboat captain James, D. Miller who played a vital role in opening the Columbia River. Miller was a co-owner of the International Transportantion Co., and an American — stern- wheeler skipper. Miller was the skipper of The Ruth, launched in 1896, She was the finest sternwheeler to appear at the time, and she could carry 100 tons of freight. She offered a dining saloon, smoking room and individual staterooms for her passengers. Faye spent part of her childhood growing up on the steamboats, She attended Whitman College in the state of Washington and worked as a school teacher. Faye spent three years _ 45 an execulive secretary in Manila, Phillipines, and travelled with her mother through China and Japan. Faye’s father was a minister who originally came from Pennsylvania. Due to health problems he bought a grocery store in Spokane, then made another change in career to become editor of a newspaper.
