Hearing loss can be prevented

one that is preventable.

Prolonged and répeated ex-
posure to loud sounds will
eventually cause hearing loss.
Protection of your cars from this
type of exposure in your early
years can help ensure good hear-
ing well into your most senior
years.”

: Hearing loss from noise’ ex-
posure is very gradual and is
often noticed by family and
friends before the person who ac-
tually has the hearing loss, The
people most at risk are those who
work daily with loud machinery
and. equipment, frequently use
firearms for hunting or target
shooting, or people involved in
the music industry,

Noise pollution doesn’t stop
here however; it is rampant in
many aspects of today’s society,
At home or at work we are con-
stanly bombarded with a steady
stream of sound from walkmans,
Stereos, clattering = computer
equipment and road and air traffic
cic, etc.

As noise levels continue to rise
so will hearing loss unless ap-
propriate precautions are taken.

How loud, how long and how
often you are exposed to loud
noise will determine how fast and
how soon you will lose your hear-
ing.

The organ in your body
responsible for hearing is the
cochlea. This is the area which is
damaged by loud sounds. This
organ has thousands of tiny hear-
ing cells which help tansmit the
sound to our brain.

A good analogy is a large wheat
field. Picture a large wheat field
blowing in the wind. Each strand
is responsible for a different
pitch, and as they bend in the
wind they retum to an upright
position,

Now picwre them in 2 wind-
storm that lasts for several weeks;
eventually the strands would lay
down without returning to an
upright position.

A study was done several ago
with a remote tibe in Africa,
There people had very little or no
exposure to the noises of a mod-
em society. All the elderly people
in this tribe had normal hearing.

With the noise epidemic shaw-
ing no signs of abating, hearing
loss is an ever growing threat.

Currently some five million
North Americans use hearing in-

‘struments, Millions more could

benefit but resist wearing them

because they don’t want to draw
attention to their condition.

The best way to prevent noise
telated hearing loss is simple;
- avoid exposing yourself to ex-
cessive noise levels.

Barring avoidance, ear pro-
lectors or ear plugs can be effec-
tive against noise exposure at the
workplace, live music concerts,
aerobics classes or any other high
decibel situation. At home or at
the office, bulky furniture, heavy
_ carpeting and thick drapes will
help muffle sound,

Remember, it is never too late
lo begin protecting your hearing.
