MP criticizes gun bill — TERRACE — Proposed federal "gun control legislation will only affect legitimate firearm owners and. not the people who shouldn’t have them in the first place, says Skeena NDP MP ~: Jim Fulton, In particular, Fulton said sug- gested requirements. for a 28-day waiting period before being allowed to buy a firearm, having a photograph on a FAC | (firearms acquistion permit) ‘and character references don’t “make sense for gun owners in rutal areas. “In smaller areas that means a. horrendous process of gather- ri. ips all that you need. It-merely - Creates a mind-boggling level of red tape for legitimate gun owners and handlers,”’ he said. California Grown. Large Size. 1 5's or Larger. CANTALOUP “This (the proposed Iegisla- tion) is going down the same road as the Liberals did, It’s a response to the use of firearms in urban areas but it makes it extremely difficult for legitimate users, especially those in rural areas,’” Fulton added. The MP prefers eliminating the requirement for FACs for tural residents and more con- centration on penalties for those who use guns in unlawful acts. The FAC elimination idea was contained in a private mempbers’s bill Fulton introduc- ed nine years ago and put for- ward again recently, . _— The proposed federal legisla- tion calls for mandatory gun safety and handling courses as ye Olympic. Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) officials said the band has sent a proposal for a chinook salmon food fi shery on the river to take advantage of replenished stocks there. But Bolton said last week the band is simply telling the government what it intends to do, and will carry out the plan with or without DFO approval. “We're going to do as other tribal groups and nations are doing around us and start asser- ting our rights — rights we never gave up,”’ he said. ““We've been Mr. Nice Guys for too long,” Bolton. said most of the fishing would likely be done at the site of an old band village at the mouth of the river’s canyon. “All we're doing is re- establishing ourselves on the river,’’ he said. He said the move doesn’t mean the band will abandon it’s Skeena River food fishery. “We've expanded our area,"* he national co-operation ‘to stop a the production of automatic § weapons, he said. ‘Israel knows the great ma- jority of the Uzis (a small, fully automatic weapon) it produces are not being sold in the legitimate market. They are go- ing underground,” said Fulton. _ He also wants extra and ‘man- datory jail sentences for those who use guns in commiting an offence, Although mandatory sentences may go contrary to court arguments which say that such punishment is contrary to the .Charter of . Rights, .Fulton - an said the measure is necessary. “Tough. That’s tough,’? he ~ said. dim Fulton FRESH B.C. Grown. Canada No. 1 Grade, First -OF the Season. The Kitsumkaium move comes after a Supreme Court of Canada decision a month ago affirmed the rights of native In- dians to fish. The judges hear- ing the case of Musqueam native Fisherman Ron Sparrow unanimously found the fishing rights of natives must. take priority over all other groups, and that conservation+is the on- ly reason to prevent natives from fishing, . . : “I think the Sparrow decision has been long overdue,’’ Bolton said. “A lot of the so-called laws governing fisheries were just interpretations by certain bureaucrats, And the courts are saying they don’t mean anything,’” “Our people have virtually been squeezed out of the Kalum, while sportfishing goes on — whether it’s regulated or not.”’ Wanted TERRACE — As many casual jobs for students as possible are wanted July 9-18 by local employment officers for a com- petition with Kitimat and Prince Rupert, ‘We've won two years in a row and we want to do it again,” said employment of- ficer Nicki Carlash.
