The Report also indicated ¥ the Local was operating with a healthy financial surplus. The well attended meeting heard President Moore state that unions must strive to - gain a greater share of the E profits for their members and t’ re-training for production { workers at the employers’ ! expense. ‘i “By putting more purchas- | ing power into the hands of ‘the membership,” he said, “‘is’ the only way to lessen the a danger of experiencing the type of recession that oc- curred during the 1950's.” The operators, he pointed out, were enjoying un- dreamed of profits and every _ indication pointed to the cur- < rent boom continuing into the 1970's. There is no logical rea- son why IWA members should not get more money now and provided the mem- ~ bership backs up their Union they will, he said. - In a bitter attack on the low wages paid in Alberta, Moore stated that the IWA THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER Local 1-423’s Annual Meet . Reports Record Progress was prepared to fight it out with the employers to ensure the workers there received fair wages. Alberta was one of the few remaining areas left unor- ganized in Canada and the IWA could ill afford to have lowly paid unorganized work- ers so close to their Interior operations, he said. In reviewing the past year’s activities, the Officers’ Report stated in part: “In the past year there has been increased activity on or- ganization in the Local Union with approximately 120 new members gained through certification. “Plant grievances have been many and varied with the operators in some in- stances pulling all the stops possible. Your officers have also dealt with a number of Workmen’s Compensation problems in addition to Un- employment Insurance prob- lems and the personal prob- lems of some of our members. “Your officers are pleased to report that the Local Un- ion has operated in the black during the last fiscal year. It has been the collective desire of your officers to keep our operating expenses as reason- able as possible and at the same time provide the maxi- mum of service to you, the membership. » IWA MEMBER IN THE MAKING?
