ie eNO Ut Sm en Tras ® & enspetranVore Help us grow as we move into high-tech It’s a brand new year — and there’s also something new at the Tribune. This first issue of 1984 marks the inaugural run of our new phototypesetting equipment, installed late last year and now in full operation, making the changes that you have no doubt already noticed in our pages. In charge of the new department — which includes paste-up as well as typesetting — is the Tribune’s newest staff member Angela Kenyon. Angela joined the Tribune staff last fall and has spent the last four months receiving intensive training to augment her considerable experience in operating word processing equipment. She supervised the purchase and installation of the equipment and organized start-up. Like the rest of the staff, Angela is a member of the Vancouver-New Westminster Newspaper Guild and the new operation is covered by Guild contract. The paper will now be typeset and pasted-up i in our Own offices and the printing will continue to be done at College Printers where press- men are members of the Graphic Communications International Union. The new technology will enable us to make the paper look more uniform. We will continue to repro- duce pages from the Canadian Tribune but the head- lines will now be in the same type throughout and we have re-designed the editorial page which will now include People and Issues and and from time to time, an editorial on local issues. ANGELA KENYON... But more than anything, the new technology will graphics department enable us to make more space available for locally produced stories — more stories from around the province, more labor coverage, more letters and commentary. And it is that coverage that we want to build on for the future. The Tribune has taken a major finanCial step into the brave new world of techno- logy. But unlike the computer moguls of the corporate world, we want to make it work for people — to expand the paper and make it a more effective, fighting voice for the working class. And that means, above all, getting the Tribune out. Is there someone you can introduce to the paper? Encourage them to get an introductory subscription at the special price. Or if you’re reading the paper for the first time, why not take out a sub yourself. If your subscription has expired or is about to, please renew it now. January 15 to 21 is renewal week — help us get every sub renewed. Make sure you’re part of the new high-tech Tribune.
