“SAVE BRITANNIA’ CAVALCADE SUNDAY ‘Evict U.S. monopoly, not miner’s families’ “Britannia Mine is in imminent danger of destruction! We are appealing to you for your support to help save this great natural resource for the people of B.C.’ This is the appeal of the Mine Mill Union this week as it announced a giant cavalcade for this coming Sunday to demand that the B.C. and Ottawa governments act to have the mine reopened. : , eee TRIDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1964 OL. 25, NO. 44 EXCLUS:VE FROM MOSCOW Why Khrushchov Resigned * —PAGE 12 For other comments See also pages 2 and 3 Five power talks urged On nuclear disarmament United Nations secretary-gen- €ral U Thant last week called for talks between the five nuclear Powers jn 1965 aimed at coping With the problems of nuclear armaments, U THANT Thant told a press conference that “it could be very worthwhile to have a dialogue between the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France, and the People’s Republic of China perhaps some time in 1965,” Commenting on Thant’s sug- gestion, Prime Minister Pearson last Friday said it was very Sen- sible, “There can benodisarma- ment, nuclear or otherwise, un- less the government of Peking participates in any agreement reached,” Pearson said during an interview. Last week William Kashtan, national secretary of the Com- munist Party of Canada, said: “The recent.explosion of an A- bomb by China emphasizes anew the urgent need to come to grips with the problem of disarma- ment, to break the logjam in dis- armament talks and to begin practical steps in that direction,” “If there is to be any eviction from Britannia, it is the billion dollar Anaconda Corporation that must go—not the miners and their families who over the years have produced its wealth, “This mine must be put to use for the benefit of Canadians; No foreign monopoly must be allowed to assert its arbitrary will-tothe contrary,” says the union’s ap- peal to the public for support of the cavalcade, Urging a large turnout, the union has called on the general public, trade unions, and all or- ganizations concerned with B,C,’s welfare, to support their action, The cavalcade will start Sunday, November 1 at 11 a,m, from the parking lot at Empire Stadium, southeast corner of Renfrew and Hastings. The appeal for support, issued by union president Ken Smith, states that government represen- tatives will be presented with the demand for reopening of the mine, A public meeting will be held at Britannia Beach at 2 p.m, and spokesmen from both levels of government and all political par- ties have been invited to attend, The- public was recently shocked when the Anaconda com- pany announced it was setting out to destroy the mine by removing the pumps and allowing the mine to flood, It is also reported that the company is beginning to dyna- mite the entrance tunnels, Picture above shows the giant Anaconda open pit mine in Chile which is one of the many holdings of this U.S. mon- opoly in Latin America. Its exploitation of the people of Latin America has been exceptionally brutal. When it Last week the Mine Mill union said in a bulletin that it had de- manded from the provincial gov- ernment that the mine be taken over, The Deputy Minister of Mines told the union that no legislation exists that would allow this, KEN SMITH, president of Mine Mill, whose union is leading the fight to block the shutdown of one of B.C.'s most important mines by a U.S. mon- opoly. The B,C, government found ways to keep this mine going be- fore—why can’t it act now? How- ever, the union has taken the stand that the people of B,C, are entitled to expect that our govern- ment would prevent a foreign company from closing down a valuable natural resource, The union’s demand has been served its purposes, this company has bent governments backed by Opposition Leader Robert’ Strachan, and by many other organizations including the Communist Party, Recently Arthur Turner, MLA, proposed that where a mining company in possession of the natural resources of our prov- ince decides to abandon an oper- ation the right and title to that resource should revert back to the Crown, In a statement to the Pacific Tribune, Charles Caron, B,C, Communist Party organizer and Federal candidate in the Coast- Capilano riding in the last elec- tion, sharply criticized MP Jack Davis for his failure to act inthe Britannia mine crisis, Caron recalled that over a month ago he wrote Davis, who represents the riding in Ottawa, urging that he intervene on be- half of the miners in Britannia, At the time Caron urged that the mine be nationalized and oper- ated in the interests of Cana- dians, In his reply to Caron, Davis opposed nationalization but vaguely suggested mediation of the dispute by the Federal De- partment of Labor, “Three weeks have gone by without any action-from Ottawa or Victoria,” said Caron, “Evi- dently public pressure on both levels of government is required to save this industry from de- struction,” he added, Caron called for full support of the Mine Mill cavalcade on Sunday, to its will and closed down operations. Now Anaconda would like to treat B.C. workers the same way. This U.S. mining octopus must be taught the lesson that it can’t get awey with it in Canada.
