Full time jobs are mostly from businesses in the areas of sales, restaurants, or even the Ministry of Transportation. AIR CANADA Jazz is laying. the groundwork to eventually bring jet service back to Terrace. Its technical experts are now developing a landing approach into the airport’ based con using one of its new CRJ jets which are slowly being introduced into. British Colum- bia, says company official Manon Stuart. ‘The 50-seat CRJs (Canadian Regional Jets), built by Bombardier, would replace Jazz’s current Dash 8 aircraft which have been the workhorse of the airline in Western Canada. A landing’ approach specific to the jets is needed becausé the current one Jazz uses for its Dash 8 aircraft isn’t suitable. The Dash 8 approach allows pilots to- come in lower and slower than a jet aircraft, giving them time to either land from the south or.circle and land from the north de-: pending upon wind conditions. But the CRJ is much faster than the Dash 8 and cannot maneuver within topographical features surrounding the airport. It: means that if the CRJ pilots want to land from the north because of wind, condi- tions, they’Il have to circle higher and wider .to'come in from that direction than if they were flying a Dash 8. She said the work done on designing a ‘CRJ landing approach into Terrace involves the aircraft's on-board global positioning system equipment. Known by its initials, GPS provides very accurate location infor- mation, something crucial here because of terrain and weather patterns. “It’s not just Terrace. There are other air- ports being looked at where conditions are just as challenging. This is all part of a big- ger picture,” Stuart added. ; The CRY is also a fast jet with a projected travel time between Terrace and Vancouver of one hour and 10 minutes to one hour and 15 minutes, she said..A Dash 8 takes one hour and 40 minutes on average. Jet service by Canadian Airlines and Air B.C. was a common feature at the Terrace airport in the 1990s with the Boeing 737 and Bac-146 aircraft being used. That service ended when Canadian Air- lines found itself blending in with Air Can- ada and when Air B.
