A10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 11, 2002 TERRACE STANDARD Bus Ingss REVIEW Hawkair flies northeast Terrace airline to begin serving Dawson Creek in October HAWKAIR Aviation will begin flying into Dawson Creck next month, mark- ing a major new expansion of service to northeastern B.C. The Terrace-based air- line will touch down in Peace River country Oct. &, says markeling director Charlynn Toews. Hawkair arrives with direct flights from Vancou- ver to Dawson Creek just as Air Canada is abandon- ing the same run, she said. The only southbound run from the city now is to Prince George, “Dawson Creek is booming,” Toews. said, “It’s one of the many com- munities in B.C. that asked us to start serving their town.” “What we sec ourselves doing here is maintaining the Vancouver link to northern markets that were underserved,” Hawkair partner Dave Menzies added. Hawkair business deve- lopment officer David Re- dekop said if traffic in Dawson Creek is as strong as expected, a fourth air- plane will soon be justi- fied. The homegrown Terrace airline just look possession of its third 37-seat Dash-8 this summer. Although they say no further acquisitions are im- minent, more planes are part of their plan. “We're always talking aboul the fourth plane, the fifth plane and the sixth plane,” Toews said. © “We've been nice and cosy in the northwest cor- . ner and that’s working well,” she added. “Now we're looking at the northeast corner, And there’s a.number of under- served communities. in south central and southeast B.C.” Menzies said they want to remain ready to take advantage of opportunities as they appear. The move means estab- lishment of a base in Daw- son Creek and three to four employees there initially, Toews said. - The Dawson Creek ex- pansion also requires a trimming of Hawkair runs elsewhere for the winter. Smithers drops from two round trips a day to one to accommodate one round trip per day into Dawson Creek. Toews said Prince Ru- pert and Terrace remain at two round trip flights per day. The Friday evening flight out of Terrace is sus- pended, despite its popu- larity. Dawson Creck service will start out at two days a week before going daily in November.
