While activity in base metals mining remains ina slump due to low com- modity prices, the North- west is experiencing a minor boom in explora- tion and extraction of precious metals. During 1986 a host of gold mining projects went into high gear. North American Metals is work- ing the Golden Bear prop- erty west of Dease Lake, Newhawk gold is in an in- tensive exploration stage in the Sulpherets north of Stewart, abandoned mines are being reworked with modern technology at Surf Inlet and on Banks ‘Island, and other ventures are being drawn to the northern reaches of the Coast Mountains by the lure of potential wealth. Westmin Resources Ltd., an exploration and- development company with mineral holdings throughout North America, recently filed a prospectus with the B.C. Mine Development Steer- ing Committee to develop an abandoned gold and silver property 15 kilometers north of Stewart. The company has been exploring the area’ since [979, and pre- liminary results indicate reserves of nearly nine million tons of ore grading an average 2.29 grams of gold per ton and 67, 87 grams of silver, The two properties be- ing examined are Silbak Premier and Big Missouri, and an executive summary of the prospectus sent to ihe, Terrace Review — Wednesday, December 31, 1986 3 ‘the Kitimat-Stikine Regional District ex- presses the intent. to develop both properties simultaneously using open pit methods.
