Douglas: so
“My wish would be to form
a body of men well disciplined,
weil armed and well drilled,
whose general duties would, of
course, be as peace officers,
but if required, be prepared to
take the field ag soldiers.”
Unfortunately, ‘he found the
potential recruits more inter-
ested in getting rich than enter-
ing police service.
. “The class of men who now
offer themselves,” he . wrate,
“are -with few exceptions per-
sons not to be trusted as a peace
officer.....‘They are: chiefly
subordinates ;, or submit. . them;
selves tothe‘ strict ‘discipline
‘which must always be maintain-
ed in -an- armed: corps...
These men -: besides, " merely
want employment for the win-
ter months and are determined
to return to their. mining pur-
suits in the spring.”
. Brew was born in 1815 at
Corsfin in County Claire, Ire-
land. He served 14 years in the
Irish - constabulary. and served
also in the Crimean War.
Chosen to lead the B.C. Police,
he lost all his moeny and pap-
ars in a midocean ship fire,
but was himself rescued. He
arrived at Victoria in Novem-
ber 1868 and soon was sent to
Yale to quell a miners’ disturb-
