This letter is written on behal* of Port Moody Recycling Society, an
organization which began operation in February 1972? as a Local
Initiatives Programme Project.

Since that time we have established the staff and facilities
necessary for the collection, storage, and sale of recyclable
materials (paper products, tin cans, container glass). Participa~
tion in the project has grown steadily throughout the past months;
people have come to rely upon the service and consider it a meaning-
ful and direct way to participate in improvement of the environment.

Recycling abates problems of solid waste disposal and conserves

Natural resources. Up to 80% of so-called "garbage" is in fact
. recyclable; that is, can be reclaimed and channelled back into
industry. Recycling also conserves energy since recycled materials
require a fraction of the power needed to process virgin resources;
it conserves air and water since steps in processing of materials
into products are by-passed and hence the pollution accompanying
those steps are by-passed as well. .

We hope you" are aware of the importance of recycling as a solution
i to solid waste disposal and resource depletion, and concerned
enough to offer your support in a letter of endorsement.
