FEWER PEOPLE showed up than expected for the Terrace ‘Churches Food Bank’s first distribution of the season last week. “We expected a busy week because we had béen closed all summer, but it wasn’t the case,” food bank volunteer John Wiebenga said of the 650 bags distributed to 350 people. Food bank workers had been prepared to distribute 750 © | . bags based on previous experience. , That’s caused food bank workers to think the local econo- my has improved and that more people are back working. “| know there is some optimism out there,” said Wieben- ga who is a member of the Christian Reformed Church, — . “In this case, you can say that less is better.” - Worker Linda Tupper said she noticed more new people . during the Oct. 17-20 distribution period. ' “Of course we always get new people but there was more » than usual this time,” she said. Tupper, a member of Knox United Church, also said there - were a lot of young men and couples this time out. The food bank operates four days each month from Octo- ber until May and is usually.timed to take place just before _ social assistance cheques go oul. It does not operate in December, leaving that month alone for the Salvation Army’s Christmas hamper program. Wiebenga said donations have been strong this year, en- abling the food bank to meet demand. “And we're looking forward to Food for Friends,” said Wiebenga of an annual effort to stock the. bank's shelves. Paving improves the road into the Gitaus subdivision THE KITSELAS band’s Gitaus subdivision east of Terrace recently had the entrance from the Highway 16 Paved and more paving is expected to happen soon. The first 300 metres from the highway into the small community was paved and paid for by the provincial trans- portation ministry. | Area transportation ministry manager Don Ramsay says the $50,000 for the project came from “Heartlands” money ’ —money earmarked in 2002 for initiatives in rural areas. The 300 metre stretch of road is the ministry’s:right of way from the highway. — _ “And we still have on our program a safety project to design a left hand turning lane from town into the subdivi- sion,” Ramsay said, adding money for, that project won’t be ‘available for another couple years. “ That project involves widening that section of road to ac- commodate the turning lane.” The Kitselas band is still waiting to hear back from Indian © and’ Northern Affairs Canada on whether it. will receive in the range of $300, 000 to pave t the residential ‘streets in the 2005 Dr. R.E.M. The first one occurred at approximately 2:00. am, An explosive device was inserted into me mail slot of a residence : located in the 4800 block of Tuck Avenue. The inner - hinge assembly flew off and struck with enough force to damage a a ~ wall in the living area. On the evening of October 13, 2005, mere were two incidents in which Molotov cocktails were thrown. The first incident occurred at . approximately 8:15 pm, in which a flaming bottle was thrown against the north wall of Caledonia Senior Secondary School's gymnasium. Some damage was sustained to the building. The second occurrence | was at approximately 10:10 pm and resulted in a.brief liquid fire "in the parking lot east of the R.E.M, Lee Theatre. There were three males seen running from the area during both incidents. The males were described as wearing dark clothing, between the ages’ of 15 and 17, one male 6’1” tall and the other two males as 5’7” tall. .
