Karen, Chrysler, a Bachelor of Social Work practicum student, has been working on the project with the regional steering committee since January of this year.. Healthy Communities is based on a broad view of health. Health is seen as more than an absence of illness. It is seen as a person’s ability to cope with their environment and to meet their own needs. The Healthy Community process _ itself involves a broad range of community people in deciding what the community needs, developing an action plan and then carrying it out. The community as a whole takes responsibility for making their ‘community a healthy one. The regional Healthy Communities Network has representatives from several communities in the Northwest. The network will act as 4a resource and a way to share information as communities work ~ to establish the process in their communities. To show their support of the regional network in a practical manner, the B.C. Office of health Promotion has given each of these representatives a sweatshirt depicting the Healthy Communities theme. No fair would be complete without a home baking contest, and the Skeena Valley Fall Fair offers two new categories this year. As well as the Five Roses apple ‘pie bake-off and the Fleischmann’s yeast whole wheat bread baking contest (these two categories were a a : a Paha fee 8 first introduced last year, and are national contests sponsored by the companies themselves), there will be a Blue Bonnet chocolate chip cookie contest and a Rice Krispies squares “fun food craft" contest for children. For the pie bake-off, entrants may submit one double crust pie made using Five Roses all purpose flour. A Five Roses logo cut from the packaging must accompany OUTDOOR HARMONY. Entries will be judged on appearance, taste, texture and creativity of recipe presentation. | For the Blue Bonnet chocolate chip cookie contest entrants must bake and submit six chocolate chip cookies made using Blue Bonnet margarine. A Blue Bonnet margar- ine logo cut from their packaging must accompany each entry. All entries will be judged on appcar- ance, taste, texture, and overall creativity and presentation. Entrants in the Rice Krispics squares "fun food kraft" must submit four Rice Krispies squares made using Kellogg’s Rice Krispies (recipe is on the Rice Krispies box), and a logo cut from the box must accompany cach entry. Squares do not have to be "square"; children can use their imagination to shape and decorate the squares. Entries will be judged on appearance, tasic, texture, and overall creativity and presentation. As well, there will also be a Winston Housc-Blue Ribbon spices pickling contest. Entrants must submit one pint of Zesty bread ’n butter pickles (recipe is in the Fall Fair flyer) made using Winston House vinegar and Blue Ribbon spices. A Winston House vinegar logo and a Blue Ribbon logo must accompany each entry. Entries will be judged on appearance, taste and texture of the pickles. And for those of you who have something unusual you’d like to display but don’t actually want to enter any of the various fair cate- gories, there will be a table set up specifically for this purpose. There is no entry fee, but Fall Fair staff would appreciate it if you would fill out an entry form and drop it off. This will enable them to keep track of what’s being entered, and they will even tag the display for you. Entry deadline for the fair is Aug. 26, 12 noon to 9 p.m., next to the tourist information centre. It is imporilant that you get your entry form in on time; #o entries will be accepted after the deadline. As well as volunteers, the falr really needs exhibitors, so why not enter and make this the best Fall Fair ever.
