18 Terrace Review — Wednesday, April 30, 1986 TERRACE — Local residents were privileged with a visit by the su- preme secretary-treasur- er of the Order of the Royal Purple (OORP) from Brandon, Mani- toba. Gladys Worthington was in town on.the week- end to help Elks Lodge No. 425 and the local OORP members cele- brate the district conven- tion held April 25, 26 and 27 in Terrace. ,The event marked Worthington’s first visit to the area. Her work on a national level includes putting into effect policies set by the various Elks member- ships. There are 18,000 Canadian representatives in the CORP and 306. Elks lodges nationally. Worthington’s work involves ‘‘quite a bit of travelling’’, but she is en- couraged about the con- Hearing-Speech month saluted TERRACE — May has long been recognized as a special month to em- phasize the need for the early identification of the hearing impaired child. It is a time to recognize that a hearing impaired child is just a normal child with a hear- ing loss if identified ear- ly, said Shirley Town- send, Ladies of the Royal Purple represen- tative in Terrace. The first three years are critical in the development of a child. It is within these first years that children develop many of the problem-solving strategies which will dic- tate how effectively they will cope in their en- vironment. It is within these three years that the child-parent relationship is being established, and it is the optimal time for development of language, Townsend ex- plained. ' May has_ been designated as a special time to recognize the im- portance of overcoming the handicap of hearing impairment which also affects language development. Overcom- ing this handicap is a responsibility shared by the family, the audiologist, the speech language pathologist, the teacher of the hearing impaired, and the medical community. As part of a national campaign to encourage the sharing of this responsibility, the Elks and Royal Purple throughout Canada have designated the first Saturday in May as Elks Purple Cross Deaf Detection Day and Public Information Day. Tag Day to be held TERRACE — The Elks Purple Cross ‘‘Tag Day” will take place in the community on Saturday, May 3. The project will be sponsored by the local lodges of the Elks 425 and Royal Purple 216. The fund-raising event is being conducted to provide money for the Elks’ Purple Cross Deaf Detection and Development Fund. ‘ cepts Elks members are ‘directed towards. ‘‘I believe they carry out necessary work in the community,’’ Worthing- ton said. She pointed out that “today’s economic situation makes the work of service volunteers very important.” Worthington said she does not believe the con- cept verbalized by some people that one person can’t do anything. ‘‘I say that one person, interac- ting with others, can move mountains if necessary.”’ She.said this is an ex- citing time to be a member of the OORP as participants have to be especially aware of the value of volunteers. A theme members have been working on for the past two years and will be working on for the next three years, is the “challenge of change and opportunity”. Worthington explain- ed that society is dif- ferent than’ it was 50 years ago and Elks rep- resentatives have to work harder to bring people into the organization as there are more leisure ac- tivities of interest to adults. ‘‘We have to compete in the market place and niake the order attractive enough to to- day’s women,’’ Worth- ‘ington explained. She added that the various organizations within the Elks lodges realize if they don’t keep working at in- creasing the member- ship, the numbers will dwindle. There was a lodge that had 48 members in 1979, but that amount had dwin- dled to 29 in 1984, Since last year, 16 new people have been initiated into the particular organiza- tion. Worthington pointed out that all the membership did was ad- dress the fact they were losing people and they decided to do something about it. Now Elks representa- tives are working to- wards the importance of leadership development within each individual lodge, Worthington said.
