William Kitbourn was commia- sioned by the department of reli- gious educatiOn of the Anglican Church of Canada to write a re- sponse to Pierre Berton’s book “The Comfortable Pew.” ‘The Restless Church” is this response. The purpose of the book was to put on record some of the discus- sion which was raised by ‘The Comfortable Pew.” The book contains a number of essays written by well known clergymen, laymen, and others con- cerned about the Christian Church. It includes a number of the book reviews published on “The Com- fortable Pew,” a3 well as a sampl- ing of the letters received by Pierre Berton, The-last-chapter of “The Restless Church’! is a :sum- ming up by Berton-answering some of the questions raised-ag a result of ‘his book. Some of the essays in the book attempt to refute Berton’s state- ments, others agree, some enlarge on remarks made in “The Com- fortable Pew.” “The Restless Church serves as an excellent addition to “The Com- fortable Pew” as an aid to anyone concerned about the role of the Christian church within our society and should open up many new areas for discussion, .
