In many respects cancer

due in part to attention focussed
on cancer of other parts of the
bedy, The lack of information
available to the public has also
been a factor.

It is true that oral cancer is
of much less magnitude, but it
is still just as important as a
tumour in other areas of the
body. Tumours in and around
-the oral cavity comprise four
_ per cent of all malignancies.

Although this may seem in-
significant, this type of cancer
is vicious and a more certain
killer than many other
malignancies. Warning signals

such as external discharges
around the mouth, bleeding or

“pain are rare in early cases,
making early detection by the

victim difficult. Regular dental
appointments aid in the
detection of an _ oral
malignancy, Most dentists have
facilities to take such tests.
An irritation that can pre-
empt a cancer lesion is
smoking, The affected areas
are found on the roof of the
mouth, the palate and the
throat. Poor oral hygiene may
result in badly decayed teeth

‘with sharp and jagged. edges
which could cause chronic’

irritation of the tongue and
cheek.

Denture wearers should have
regular and at least annual
examinations on the health and
state of the dentures supporting
tissue and sore spots. i-fitting

EFFECT OF OUR
ENVIRONMENT

Studies of many populations
throughout the world have
indicated that at least 80 per-
cent of cancers are caused by
environmental factors.

. Some of these have already
been identified in
epidemiological studies, par-
ticularly cigarette smoking as a
cause of cancers of the lung and
bladder = and chemical
cacinogens in some oc-
cupational groups.

Other leads are currently
being actively pursued. It is
anticipated that the study of

factors such as diet, social
customs and habits previous
‘illnesses and medical care,
occupation and ethnic origin of
Canadians over the next few
years will lead to the iden-
lification of more causes of
cancer.

This will increase our op-
portunities ior the prevention of
cancer if the responsible factors
can be eliminated.
