THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER ae ALSO NEW CONFERENCE TRADESMEN'S DEMANDS APPROVED BY BOARD Demands formulated at the Tradesmen’s Conference held July 13 in Vancouver, have been approved by the Re- gional Executive Board and will now be referred to the Coast Negotiating Committee for action. The Board also approved the Tradesmen’s proposal that another Conference be called to discuss ways and means of bringing pressure on the in- dustry and to involve the Tradesmen in the negotiations. The following is the list of the demands: CALL TIME (a) Two hours call time. Such two hours to cover ad- vice call or travel to and from operation. (b) Where tradesman is called out to the operation, he STRIKE shall be guaranteed a mini- mum of four hours pay at overtime rates, in addition to (a) above. The employee to be released immediately the emergency is over. That all Locals be requested to mail to the Regional Coun- cil all agreements signed covering call time. OVERTIME RATES OF PAY That the overtime rate of pay be double time. In the event an employee is required to work overtime a hot meal shall be provided. A person working overtime shall receive a minimum of two hours pay. TOOL ALLOWANCE AND > INSURANCE That the Committee be in- structed to negotiate a tool allowance and tool insurance provisions. NOTICE The IWA, as a major affiliate of the B.C. Federation of Labour, is continuing to support the Federation’s policy of conducting a selective boycott against Imperial Oil products. This policy yas reaffirmed at a meeting August 11 between Federation affiliates and the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers Union. The IWA agrees with the Federation’s suggestion that 3 IWA TRADESMEN attending the Tradesmen’s Conference July 13 at Woodworkers’ House, Vancouver. A number of proposals were adopted at the meeting dealing with the current problems of the tradesmen. JURISDICTION OF TRADES The Committee be author- ized to negotiate the jurisdic- tion of trades. PREMIUM _RATE FOR TUESDAY TO SATURDAY Overtime rates for Saturday work, CONTRACTING AND MAINTENANCE WORK. A clause in the agreement requiring that all regular maintenance and repair work be done exclusively by em- ployees of the parent com- pany. GENERAL TRADESMEN’S REVISION A $1.00 per hour increase. An additional 50 cents an hour for people who work away from their shop. That Article V, Section 1 (a) be processed for proper clarification. the dispute should be settled by an outside mediator and the fact that neither the oil companies nor the Social Credit government have seen fit to move in this direction shows a complete lack of responsibility. MAJOR AUTO UNIONS DEVELOP NEW ALLIANCE PLAN The three major auto un- ions in Britain and North America have reached an in- formal agreement which could lead to workers in one country striking in sympathy with workers in another. The agreement was devel- oped during a union seminar. It was attended by repre- sentatives of the Transport and General Workers Union and the Amalgamated Engin- eering Union — Britain’s two largest trade unions — and North America’s United Auto Workers, General secretary - elect Jack Jones of the Transport and General Worker’s Union said: “We have not decided to set up a joint body between the three unions, but clearly this is the start of an informal al- liance between us and we shall make sure it is developed that way.” Jones added that since the big car manufacturers should have no compunction about moving operations from one country to another, the auto unions should reach to combat this.
